Peterson Question

If you are looking at Peterson pipes for sale, and the listing describes the pipe as "standard", is that synonymous with "system?"

It's possible that the listing is describing a system standard. However, I would always want more information. Then use Mark Irwin's Peterson Pipe Notes blog (or the wonderful Peterson book) and/or the Peterson.ie website for final verification. Shape number? Line? Depending upon the seller and their Peterson knowledge, they could just be referring to a "standard" Peterson.

To give a specific example, Tobaccopipes.com has this listed:

You can see right in the url they just call it "standard".

I took your advice and went to the Peterson website and found this:

Looks like the same pipe, I'm just spooked by the lack of the term 'system' in the description on the tobaccopipes site..

303 designates a system pipe. The same style in non system lines would be an 03.

Wow, excellent. Thanks! I'd always wondered why some numbers were shorter.

My Peterson 301and my XL307 are both stamped "System Standard" on the bottom. Those likely will be too.

As noted above, the shape number will allow you to determine whether or not the Pete is a system pipe. On some estates purchased over the years, I need to do a little research because of changes to the numbering system. The research can be more fun than chasing a pipe.

The terms are not synonymous but are related. There are a number of variations of System pipes: Cara, Deluxe, Premier, Spigot, and Standard. A pipe stamped Standard is a System pipe. Systems come in smooth, sandblasted and rusticated. I like the 309, so I have one of each. Good smokers!
