Any ideas?
IDK but what a wonderful blast!
Thanks man, it's been driving me crazy for years so figured I'd let BoB take a swing. I see the striations you speak of. I can make out "per" in an Olde English style script. It feels American or Italian. The "PAIN" stamp seems American, but the pipe itself feels Italian or Italian inspired.Looking closely at the makers plate there are a lot of parallel grooves perpendicular to the shank. It makes me think the makers stamp was intentionally removed, sanded or buffed out. Or perhaps it was never stamped, a second? Great looking Lovat nontheless.
Smart, I'll do it!I like a good puzzle but I'm afraid my resources are limited and my experience searching these pipes even more so. I hope you get a plausible answer, good luck. Have you tried to take a light charcoal rubbing of the plate with light tissue paper? You'd be amazed at what that can sometimes reveal. Even cigarette papers can work, or packing tissue. Think of it like lifting a fingerprint.
Just looking at the rustification pics, it screams Castello to me. It is just a bit finer in size than my old Natural Vergin. But clearly, that's not marked Castello. So, one of their makers practicing? As mentioned, a second of some sort?
Genius!The stamp missed the opening…PAIN = SPAIN ? Just a thought.
