    Pipe Terminology Lesson 1

Lots of Ashtons were carved and then blasted, so that's actually quite a likely scenario on your pipe Kevin. We use "carved" as a way of selling a rusticated pipe as a higher price point. Cheapest pipes in every range are rusticated, it's the most flexible finish in terms of briar. Not...

    Pipe Terminology Lesson 1

Yup. Blasting shows the internal structure of the wood: Where rustication leads to any number of interesting and pleasing "artificial" textures:

    Peterson XL26

Yeah that sucks for sure, and you've been more patient than I would have been in the same circumstances. I'd make you one but it's an ugly pipe. :P

    Peterson XL26

Let me speak in defense of Peterson, not because I am a fanboy, but just to shed some light on what is being asked for here. Peterson makes tons of pipes every day, in big batches of shape and finish. Many of their shapes are fairly rare, requiring pretty big pieces of wood. Many of their...

Look at my woodie, m' kay

Yeah I never got along with the drinkless fitment. I'd own a lot more woodies if I did. Will just keep my eyes out for that unsmoked Paul Bunyan that is sure to turn up soon.

Look at my woodie, m' kay

Scroll down this "master list" to "Early Kaywoodie"   you'll see some similarities.   What a great pipe to own! http://kaywoodie.myfreeforum.org/Kaywoodie_Master_List_about7.html

Look at my woodie, m' kay

    I'm thinking pre 1926.

Look at my woodie, m' kay

Any markings on it? shape number, anything to go on? There's some "hidden" resources regarding dating etc. Value is funny.... I mean, if you collect super rare kaywoodies maybe it's worth 400 bucks.... if you don't... it ain't. I saw an unsmoked 11b go on ebay for 200. And that's cuz...

How do you tighten a 9mm stem?

That works on vulcanite, not sure it will stick to delrin or teflon. :?:

Please show off your large bent billiards.

The 120 is very, very difficult to make for a few reasons. One is that it has an elongated and somewhat curved shank when done "well", like a mini-LC, and that takes quite a rare piece of briar. Two is that it's just a very hard shape to get right, it's a very big pipe, but a very lean one...

Please show off your large bent billiards.

It is huge. It's an inch across and near 3 deep. You could load a whole tin of flake in there I guess.

Please show off your large bent billiards.

From top left, going down columns.... Don Carlos, Brigham, Castello (kkkk so we have big pipes in pic!) Il Ceppo, Ser Jacopo, Kaywoodie Peterson 140th, Pete "Professor", Radice

How do you tighten a 9mm stem?

I use Krazy Glue. Any cyano-acrylate will work. Don't get it on yer fingers. Under ordinary circumstances, you have a choice of expanding a tenon or reducing a mortise if things are loose - with a 9mm pipe the most likely tenon is delrin or teflon, and it's probably real thin. So trying...

Please show off your large bent billiards.

I'll get a pic later, but just about all I have is large bent billiards!
  15. Sasquatch

How do you tighten a 9mm stem?

Leave the tenon alone and run a drop of super glue inside the mortise, spread it with a toothpick or whatever. Let it dry for a 1/2 hour, test the fit, repeat as necessary. Works like a damn and will stabilize the mortise as well.

    The Origiinal Devil Anse

Where did you look? Because, honestly, I googled "Peterson pipe jap shape" and got about 70 hits. https://petersonpipenotes.wordpress.com/tag/peterson-jap-shape/
  17. Sasquatch

    The Origiinal Devil Anse

There are historical precedents for the shape. One fairly realistic historical possibility is that the pipe is a cut-down (broken and repaired) version of some more traditional shape, but there are certain pipes that date from 100 years ago or more of that ilk - look at Peterson's "Jap" for...

Ashton and the Deep Blast Revival

I mentioned the same on another board... an article about deep blasts (going so far as to call others "pedestrian") should maybe show some blasts that aren't totally pedestrian. Pure unadulterated salesmanship.
  19. Sasquatch

    Artisan, or Pipemaker?

Rad Davis used to tease me about using that term. I like it. I think claiming that a pipe is "engineered" is not wrong. On just about any of these definitions: design and build (a machine or structure). skillfully or artfully arrange for (an event or situation) to occur. synonyms: bring...

    A Most Disturbing Crack

I will be the voice of dissension, then. This kind of crack is common with over-lighting, as you draw flame right against the new wood. More care with your first smokes and less attempt to smoke every crumb! The pipe itself is not to blame, and will never suffer for this incident anyhow...
