    What Are You Smoking Pages.

I never broke an amber stem on any of my antique meers, just it's easy to do and with age/use I think they get more brittle - maybe UV effects them, too. Never turned amber rod on my lathe, if it's even available anymore. But acrylic that resembles amber is. You might look into getting that...

Zippo, beautiful pipe. Look how similar yours is to mine, although mine is capped with gold. I fit mine with a DC bit years ago. Never thought about it having an amber bit, but I bet it did.

I once got an eBay Charatan Freehand Relief, Lane era Cutty shape that I paid very little for. It was splattered with dried paint, had a completely oxidized bit, and a cake so think you could only get a pencil into it; it was short of a miracle it hadn't split the bowl. It took a week, but a...

Flannery O'Connor once wrote, "Mystery is an embarrassment to the modern mind". Bottom line: everything is filled with mystery. I had an astrophysicist at the S. Pole when I was stationed there who told me he studies how stars are born - using the radio telescope there - because it's filled...

A second pipe of Stokkebye LBF VaPer. In a carved head of an Arab. Stamped "Made in France" and "Made by Hand". No factory name. I inherited this pipe, left to me by my professor of philosophy after he passed away. Dates from the 1950s is my best guess. The pipe has a beautiful Birdseye on both...

not made for pipes and tobacco - hacks reappropriation

All oils can go rancid. I keep the oil tin, that is food grade and I get it at the grocery store, in the refrigerator. I've just used it when I turn a Benchmade and in the bowl with heat - short burst from the microwave will boil it, adding oil as needed. I plug the shank with a wooden dowl. I...

not made for pipes and tobacco - hacks reappropriation

Almond oil is a safer and better alternative IMHO. I have oil cured Benchmade pipes I've turned with it. If there are any plant resins in the briar it will drive them out. I boil the oil in the bowl using my microwave. All I have kept have been sweet smokers.
