Who has working smoke detectors in their home?

I have three, all with CO detectors as well. I heat with wood so our stove is running most of the time in winter. I also am a DAT (disaster action team) responder for the American Red Cross. We get thousands of smoke detectors donated every year and have multi-day Sound the Alarm events. We...

    what is like Plum Pudding?

It's been a favorite of mine for a couple years now, along with their Mississippi Mud. PP comes quite moist and needs to be broken down a bit. By itself, it's quite strong, but mix it at about 1/4 to 1/2 with a Va or Vaper or Va-Burley mix and it becomes a wonderful latakia blend. In a...

    Can money buy happiness?

Aussiemike broached a wonderful question we all should consider. I've had a bit of a rough start in life (last polio epidemic to hit the U.S., couple years in an iron lung, wheelchair, crutches and 11 major reconstructive surgeries throughout my childhood) but had loving and supportive parents...

    An Act of God?

Unless your state laws are "unique", (increasingly the case in increasingly separating states), a tree or branch that falls or obstructs the adjoining property is the responsibility of the property owner where the tree is growing. ClinchKnot's correct in the above post regarding property...

    Floods in Texas

Back from another deployment for the American Red Cross. This time it was to the floods (ongoing) in South Texas. I'm used to working tornados and hurricanes, but not as experienced at assessing damage from floods. We can't share on-line the pictures we take to verify the damages, but I was...

Best Crew I've Ever Worked With

I've red carded parents, coaches, and ran in terror from a "lady" charging the field because her little cupcake was taken out by a very legal but rough slide tackle. My wife described her as looking like she had been "ridden hard and hung up wet". Security had to "assist" her out of the soccer...

Best Crew I've Ever Worked With

This is probably the last year for me reffing high school soccer. For some reason. I can't quite understand why, a short, mid-70's old guy with a bum leg and arm (and brain, but we won't go there!) can't run faster than 18 year old varsity athletes, boys or girls. I had 17 glorious years...

    I didn’t catch where you were from….

First 20+ years, Wisconsin and "da UP hey", bounced around with teaching jobs, landed a tenure track in central Arkansas and have stayed here the past 35 years. We're moving to eastern Virginia soon to be near family.

    Frightening wisdom.

Oh, and don't forget Pooh Bear, simple wisdom at it's best.

    Solar Eclipse

Well, that was just about perfect for an eclipse. The weather was clear, so we went to my university and had a blast with several thousand others. Busses from Tennessee, Texas, and Florida were arriving but it was spread throughout campus so plenty of room, food and drinks for all. The major...

    Solar Eclipse

Scarlett getting ready for the solar eclipse next week, (even though she won't see it in Virginia). Conway is quite close to the maximum event line, with an estimated time of just under four minutes of total maximum. There are estimates of up to a million and a half visitors in the state (we...

water to rind ratio - talking oranges and shrinkflation

I noticed similar in the slices of Blood oranges in my Old Fashions. I want to muddle the pulp, but avoid crushing the rind, and as the rind's get wider, it's increasingly harder to avoid it. Aaaaah, the difficulty of my life. I think I'll start a Go Fund Me page to compensate for this...

You can all sleep well tonight...

...knowing that our Democracy is safe, now that I'm a Pole Worker. It's Primary season in Arkansas and early voting is available through Monday the 4th, with Election Day on Tuesday the 5th. While our early voting is rather light (compared to the main voting day), it has still increased from...

CHIAPPA LITTLE BADGER & SURVIVAL RIFLES

I like the Henry AR7 for my canoe trips. Light, stores in stock, waterproof, and floats.

    7'+ black Rat Snake

Just before molt, notice the lovely blue eyes. Along with the king snakes, eastern hognose, and copperheads they keep the wood rat population in the wood pile under control. They also keep my wife from bringing wood up to the wood box (or she uses it as an excuse not to help).

What's your drink for the night?

Yes, the basic blended and 12 year Costco Scotch is very good for the price. Now if they'd just get their great bourbons back in stock.

    You Thought I Was Kidding?

I've had grilled guinea pig in Bolivia and Peru in the past, but rats?!?

What's your drink for the night?

She Who Must Be Obeyed ordered an Old Fashioned tonight; 2 dashes regular and orange bitters over a few grains of demerara sugar, cherry and orange slice muddled in, then one large cube, a healthy amount (is there really a healthy amount of liquor?) of Four Roses Single Barrel, and a splash of...

Proof females are smarter than males, in all species

Opening day of deer season in Arkansas. Eight does in my front yard while the males are back in the woods where the hunters are. Not only in deer, but also in humans, the females are the smarter ***, which I seem to prove to my wife daily.

    chickpea pasta

We just made a seafood linguini with the chickpea pasta. The teste was very good. Only downside I found was the next day, the leftover noodles were rubbery and bland. They didn't age well, (but then, neither have I).
