    Fair weather smoker?

Well . . . the workshop idea works for me certain times of the year, primarily to stay out of the rain. In the springtime I enjoy looking out the window at the blossoming Dogwoods, Redbud, and Cherry Blossoms. But today it is rather bleak, and not much enjoyment from my pipe. My mother had to...

C&D Orion's Arrow in an English Comoy 215. Sitting in the workshop looking out at the freezing rain coming down. Kind of bringing my mood down so I'm going to make myself a nice Cappuccino.

    Happy IPSD 2021 everyone

As ftrply mentions, the SP blog about IPSD is good. Interesting that yesterday when I did a Google search on International Pipe Smoking Day the suggested Google response highlighted in a text box talked about the Vancouver Pipe Club starting the idea (maybe just in North America?), but today I...

What the hell is that? Never heard of a NAP bit. Something I'll have to research unless you care to enlighten us about its origin. ;)

Agree about YouTube reviews. Other than Bremen Pipe Smoker whom I enjoy for the travelogue aspect, I haven't found any worth my bother. But talk of EGR means that's what I'm going to load up right now and enjoy. Always comfort food for me!

Sillem's Commodore Flake in a paneled Design Berlin. I first discovered this unique and tasty flake in a trade exchange with Briar Beagle. Since then availability has been sparse, and now I see why: it has been repackaged under the John Aylesbury brand and is now sold as Commander Flake. I'll...

    Happy IPSD 2021 everyone

I know that the Vancouver Pipe Club started the idea of IPSD, but how did they come up with a date in February? Personally I would have avoided summer or winter because many pipe smokers have weather issues that put their enjoyment on hold. I would have gone with Spring or Autumn. If anybody...

I've had three bowls so far, just haven't had a chance to log on and see what's going on. Early morning was Wilke Royal Scot in a Stanwell Trio, Late morning was Gawith Hoggart Rum Flake in a Stanwell brushed brown 9mm. Early afternoon was Wilke 193 in a Falcon with briar bowl (pictured). I...

Good to have JimInks weigh in here, and I think kxg also knows many of the Wilke blends if he cares to add any suggestions. My top three for re-order are Surbrug's Crystal Palace, No. 400, and High Hat (for making "Benediction"). A notch below those would be Commander, and No. 111 (if you like...

Wilke 515 in a B&B 9mm. The slight addition of coumarin (or tonka bean) not as evident in this pipe as it has been in others, so I was able to better enjoy the underlying tobacco flavor. Still, not one that I will re-order.

Wilke No. 400 in a Design Berlin Siegfried. One of my favorites. Bundled up for 29 degrees but the cool air feels good on my face after 20 ounces of dark coffee got my body temp up. For those who might be interested Wilke is having a 20% sale on their tobacco for the next three days.

My own blend called Wellington in a Yves St. Claude bent brandy. So named because the flavors remind me of a Christmas Beef Wellington (baked dough over beef). Mostly savory MacBaren Dark Twist with some McClelland red and stoved Virginias and some Peretti Black Virginia. The snow is light and...

My own blend called Dark Matter in an Alpha Centurion. This is mostly Solani Aged Burley and MacBaren Old Dark Fired with 1/12 Gawith natural brown Cavendish. Good and smokey. Prepping for possible power outages due to approaching ice storm.

C&D DaVinci in a B&B rusticated billiard. This blend used to be a favorite, but today it just seems too over the top, so I stopped at the half bowl, and I'll finish it later tonight after dinner. Flavors of overly roasted (almost burnt) pistachio, salted peanuts and grill scrapings.

Solani Aged Burley in the little "Bronx Baby" pipe I got from BriarPipeNYC. If I pack it about 3/4 full it's just the right amount to accompany me on my 15 minute drive into town, and maybe I finish the last couple minutes sitting in the parking lot. I don't care for small bore pipes that I...

Continuing the Burley theme for today: C&D Kelly's Coin in a MM Mark Twain cob. Probably do something milder next, maybe Sutliff Match Edgeworth.

    Calabash Pipe Rest

Wow. If you have some kind of replicator or blueprint you could make these in quantity and sell them on eBay or to B&M pipe shops. Great design.

For my morning bowl of Burley in memory of Paul_of_Burley I decided to go with something I knew he enjoyed: C&D Dark Burley in a paneled Design Berlin. For the brief time he was a member here (not quite three months) he was very generous with his postings, and provided a unique perspective. He...

One of my own experimental mixtures with middling results. Just proves blending is as much art as it is science. Based on nose and taste of a common creamy tapioca/bourbon undertone I thought C&D Pegasus and Wilke Commander would work together. I think it was the slight ginger note of the...

Interesting that for Virginia flakes I like a tall narrow bowl but for Burley or dark-fired a larger bowl works better. I'm not sure why that is. Just be sure to put a good layer of kindling on top - enough to get a good cherry going.
