    English Stout

Further rubbing out of any tobaccy is strictly a personal preference, not something one *must* do. I've found in some cases that it helps packing and smoking. As with most things pipe-tastic, your mileage may vary.

    My Peterson GURGLES... HELP!

I was a year old

    What are you smoking?

Nothing at the moment, but it will be a big ole bowl of GLP Barbary Coast in a Savinelli bent Dublin as soon as I make it to mi casa.

    My Peterson GURGLES... HELP!

Not quite sure which of the Peterson line mine is, to be honest. I bought it before I really knew a whole lot about pipes. It was just "expensive" and looked oh-so pretty and I had to have it :) It's a flame-grain, bent apple shape. I'll have to look at it when I get home and see if I can't find...

    Artistically Inclined?

    PM sent regarding this, jhugget.

What Blends should I start with? HELP!

Just keep trying stuff that sounds good to you. I know that's not much advice, but it's about the best I can give. What tastes good to one piper may not to the next so it's hard to say "Sure, these are THE 'baccys you should start with, hands down". When I first started, I had so many open...

    My Peterson GURGLES... HELP!

They don't all have that space between them, just depends on who's making them and how they're made. Artisan pipe makers pay a good bit more attention to these kinds of things than the "big box" carving houses generally do; that's not a knock on the larger companies, just "one of those things"...

    Artistically Inclined?

I'll ask him.. he's a good guy and looking for things he can point to and thump his chest at, so to speak, as examples of his work. Are there any specific dimensions he would need to work within? Is there anything particular you'd like to see from the design? Let me know. Thanks! Matt

    Artistically Inclined?

I work with a kid who is going to school for design. He's a good artist and is basically taking all comers at the moment so he has a useful portfolio. I can ask if he'd be willing to throw a couple of ideas together. Let me know and I'll talk to him. He'll waive any fee when I wave his employee...

    English Stout

Where did you get this from? I believe I have some in my collection, but it may be same name, different blend. Mine, I believe, is from pipesandcigars.com. I've smoked it a few times without many problems. You may need to look at how you're packing it if it's not staying lit. That seems to be...

    A Worhorse Tobacco

I have some 5100 in my current collection and I like it well enough. However, I received a sample pack for Christmas a few years ago from pipesandcigars.com which included a blend called Old Red. It was reminiscent of 5100, smooth, a hint of the sweet side, etc but seemed to be more flavorful...

    Straightgrain vs. Crossgrain

This is a bit off-topic and maybe(or not?) requires a thread of it's own: LatakiaLover.. you mentioned that most carved rustication leaves you cold. How so? I'm curious for curiosity's sake. I go a couple of different ways on rustications. Some I flat out love, others I don't even want to hold...

So what kind of pipe guy are you?

I guess I'm a "whatever's at hand" kind of pipe guy. I own a handful of Savinellis, a Peterson, two Boswell's, a Nording and a few other miscellaneous brands. I unfortunately have none of the pipes I'd really like to have, e.g. Tinsky, Talbert, Rad Davis and some of the other American makers I...

    How many lights?

I never bothered to keep track, so I guess my best guess is "as many as it takes". Probably around 4-5 on average, but I tend to not worry so much if the pipe goes out while I'm smoking. A flick of the bic and I'm back in business.

    Subtle vs Bold

You go any direction you need to with your 'baccys. I've yet to run across a GLPease blend that hasn't been a good smoke, regardless of whether it was my "type" of tobacco.
