    Curved drilling

I visited the shop of Guyot many times when I lived in Paris. I believe that the shop was over 100 years old. They made pipes and sold the pipes of other makers. The last time I was in the store I purchased several pipes, and Monsieur Guyot gave me a copy of the book, which he had written. I...

    Curved drilling

Yep, that is the drawing that I mentioned. Do you also have the book, or did you get the drawing off another site? Thanks. Mike Hagley

    Curved drilling

I posted a drawing on another forum some time back. The drawing is from a book written by a French pipe maker about 20 years ago. Maybe it will help. This technique has long been referred to as a "drifted shank". I can't figure out how to post an image here, so if someone can help, I will be...

    Jobey Link

I worked at a Tinder Box while in college and we sold a lot of Jobey pipes. They never came with filters, so I doubt the link was designed for that purpose. Mike Hagley

    Pipe Ethics...

I used to own a Ferndown silver spigot large Dublin, and did not like the shape. So I turned it into a large billiard with files and sandpaper. I was quite pleased with the result, and since Ferndown does not use shape numbers, no one was the wiser. I later sold the pipe and told the buyer...

    What's It Worth?

I actually think that the pipe is kinda neat. It looks to be a very nice piece of wood, but I was just looking at how it would look without that base. I have seen quite a few Savinelli Autographs with that type of treatment. I owned one myself, and I guess the carver just felt that it was too...

    What's It Worth?

If you win the pipe, you can send it to Mark Tinsky, and he can finish the pipe for you, and remove that excess wood from the bottom. Just a couple minutes on a disc sander, and there you go. Mike

Castello nomenclature on my sea rock

The N is to designate Noli, in Milan. They are one of the best known shops in Europe, and are located in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele to the left of the Cathedral. The pipe was originally sold to Noli, but I suspect the pipe came from some other shop, so why don't you contact the place that...

    Meooooow!

That is a very collectible piece, and I think the buyer got a bargain. What many of us do not understand is that there is a large collector market for antique pipes, and often the collectors do not even smoke. There is a monkey pipe on ebay right now at around $400, and I told my wife it will...

    Lovat I made

That is really nice work. While I wouldn't call it a lovat, it is pretty none the less. You sure lucked out with that piece of briar. Mike Hagley

    Hi From Mike Hagley

I have been floating around the pipe world for quite a few years, and reading/contributing to various groups. I thought that I would visit here and see what was new and interesting. Glad to see some good friends, whom I respect, posting here. From Georgia, Merry Christmas to all of you. Mike...
