    Spilman Mixture

Thanks for the fine review. SM is a longtime favorite (since it was 'reinvented' around 2009), although Distinguished Gentleman has the edge in taste for me.

Orlik Golden Sliced - Orlik Golden delicious!

It gets tastier the longer you dry it out. I have a mason jar full of this one and cellared a dozen tins of it years ago. You can't go wrong with this solid winner, imo, if you like bright virginias.

    Diabetic issues

I'm a Type 2 diabetic (diabetes mellitus) and my glucose levels have been under control since I was diagnosed and began the treatment for this condition nine years ago. I smoke a pipe every day and cannot attribute any adverse impact on my diabetic condition to pipesmoking in my case.

What are your favorite flake pipes and flake tobaccos?

Solani Aged Burley Flake in the Sasieni Royal Stuart straight bulldog. SG BBF in the Mastro de Paja 3A One Sun dublin. Conical chamber shapes, I've found, are good for flakes.

I think I got the VaPers!

H&H Louisiana Red is a good introductory VaPer. LR and Park-Lane Red Paramour are good choices if along with perique you also like the brighter virginias. Other good VaPers are McClelland Tudor Castle and Beacon and C&D Bayou Morning.

    Fribourg & Treyer

And I thought the British and Europeans were more politically correct than we were.

    Fribourg & Treyer

I have Blackjack and Cut Blended Plug and like them considerably. Haven't yet tried, but also have, Golden Mixture and Vintage (Virginia). GM was Bertrand Russell's favorite and almost exclusive pipe tobacco throughout his life, but I don't know how similar the modern version might be to what...

My new BST (Sasquatch) pipe is here!!

Lighting a good pipe, kicking back and drifting away... Best and most concise description of the Nirvana state that I've ever read.

My new BST (Sasquatch) pipe is here!!

This pipe is quite an original concept in design and shape. It has all the elements that, at first sight, suggest that looks and functionality are working well together. I'm positive that you'll find that is the case. I have several sasquatches myself and that has been my own experience...

    The Shield- any fans?

I love this series, but the early seasons are very varied and a bit unstructured. Not necessarily a bad thing since it represents a fluid and almost chaotic urban reality, a reality that in its true essentials has been largerly ignored by the media, the movies and other tv shows. But the last...

I just tried Mac Baren's "Navy Flake."

Great review. I love this blend. When I first smoked it I disliked it. Then I realized that it comes looking deceptively dry in the tin and actually needs some jar time, following by some airing out time. Night and day difference for me. Love that flake cut.

    What's Yer Nirvana Tequila?

If you give that bottle of tequila to a ladyfriend as a gift it will have this additional benefit: it will count as two gifts.

An apology to all members of BoB

A lot of sudden spam eh? Have you by any chance joined Facebook recently? If so, you'd be lucky if spam ends up being your only problem.

    Anyone try Kajun Kake?

Another good introduction to VaPers is H&H Louisiana Red.

    FVF

Just make sure they're reputable and respected e-tailers, such as Cup O Joes and others mentioned in this thread, not a spoofed site (it happens) or some goniff flybynighter or one who is about to retire and then knowingly leaves you hanging with a cc charge but no merchandise sent to you. Hard...

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

My main problem was that abstract threats, too noble to neglect, deceived me into thinking I had something to protect. So I protected the wrong things.

    Vices of the 1880's

Do they have a bordello complete with tinny piano and bead curtains? With a circular couch around a support column to display the wares, as in paintings of the era? They had a mercury cure for the consequences back then. Do they serve absinthe? If they do, then we're talking...

    H.P. Lovecraft

Your reply reminds me of something that C.G. Jung wrote about writing that (supposedly) comes from the unconscious, that it tends to be convoluted and portentous like that, laden with racial memory.

    Favorite TV tough guy

I loved that movie when it came out (lucky to have caught it in its initial release as the studio practically buried it!), and I love it now. I've even managed to obtain a copy of the original novel in which it was based. Forget the unspeakeable remake, this one is the real thing. Carter's...

    Burley

+1 on Wessex Burley Slice and H&H Classic Burley Kake. But would also recommend Solani Aged Burley Flake.
