I find the stem work on most seconds pipes to be lacking, particularly GBD and Comoys. (Pre-molded, plasticky, etc) . First line pipes from those two are still reasonable, so I quit searching for the seconds. However, the stem on this one really impressed me.

Becker unfortunately had a period in his life dominated by drugs and alcohol, I guess that has to take a toll. Most of the stars that have passed in an early age had similar stories.

It's an acquired taste for sure. I said the same as you early on. But, after finding a few higher grade, pre-Republic pipes with vulcanite P-lip stems, my opinion changed 180 degrees. Now there are times where I prefer a P-lip Peterson.
