How do you smoke straight VA?

Mike, I have a Pete 305 that smokes hot if given the slightest chance. Very hot. I decided I'd tame it or toss it and since I like the looks of the pipe.....long story short.....it taught me how to smoke Va's and it still smokes hot easily but I've learned to slow way down in order to keep it...

    Why Cigar ash for 'mud'

I grind black pipe ash (carbon) and then add some of the white ash. The mix dries very hard and I've never had a failure as sometimes happens with cigar ash. I like it better.

    Changes

Kyle, I wish I had something other than best wishes to offer but that's all I have. You've got staying power and that's what it takes. Good luck to you.

    Smokin' Rope

I've smoked the rum twist and I bought a wee chunk of Black Chery Twist at a rendezvous last year and liked it. It definitely is a different cherry than any I had tried before. Cherry with some oomph behind it.

    Smokin' Rope

I've smoked the brown pigtail and loved it. Tasted like brown bogie but also resembles brown twist. No surprise there since all three are made with the same tobacs. I've read that it's the diameter of the twist that makes it a pigtail, bogie or twist going from thin to thick.

I Tried A Carey Magic Inch

Did your pipe have one of the Papyrate (paper) sleeves on the tenon? This link shows a bit about the pipes and is where you can get the sleeves when you need some. http://www.eacarey.com/magicinchinfo.html

    falcon pipes

Falcons aren't made to be taken apart at the bit. The literature that comes with the Falcons states as much. If Falcons are coming apart at the wrong place (the bit) when/after they come into the shop somebody probably did not know to not remove the bits on several brands of "metal" pipes...

Reducing Heat by Keeping Ash Covering the Last Tobacco

I used to dump the ash halfway down the bowl, or thereabouts. I found by accident that I get a better smoke if I don't dump the ash so I stopped doing it most of the time. With something like 17fireproof92 or Brackken flake I usually dump halfway but like to keep some ash over the last 1/4 bowl...

    What makes you feel old?

Getting out of bed in the morning and having the pain hit full force. Gets the attention AND makes me feel ancient at 62. Of course, five heart attacks didn't help anything :)

    Smoking Rope w/o Rubbing Out?

I use a bastardized fold and stuff for thin cut Danish flakes and it works well but for British flakes I rub'em  out now. I have never found anything in old British prose or poetry that claims the old timers smoked intact flake. I have found some references to rubbing out flake, thinly slicing...
