    Thinking of trying pipe carving

First of all, me being a retired military advisor for Department of Defense, with ties to what's going on and without letting out any state secrets, I can assure you that things will soon get a lot more interesting in the Philippines.  Maybe not in 5 months, but soon. Now that said, I am not a...

HI Deverish! WTG on moving over to pipes. I won't hold you being in the Air Force against you (Army here) -- it will just take you a while longer to get with the program  :o  Welcome, Brother  ;)

Indeed, what's up with that Todd Harris pipe? I own two -- both mortas -- and they will absolutely not be my last. I am interested in what Todd can do in Briar  ;)

    For a co-worker...

The stem/bowl transition is, in my experience (No,I am not a pipe maker, but from what I'be learned over more than several decades is reflected here) ... a pipe maker's biggest challenge, whether just starting out, or one who's experienced at making pipes. That said, in this case, with this...

    For a co-worker...

Nice work! I agree with Flyguy.  The small amount of stain in the bowl is an esthetic issue.  It can likely be sanded  off, but I wouldn't bother. Some pipe makers coat their bowl interiors to hide certain "imperfections" such as this.  I personally much prefer an uncoated, natural bowl -- a...

    Group Sizing?

"Group size" determination, even with Dunhill is, IMO, a ballpark estimate at best to give us some idea of the pipe's size; i.e., some are identified as Group 4, but are really Group 5, while another Group 4 is a Group 3, yet another Group 4 is actually a Group 4. That said, other makers who...

    Dunhill Royal Yacht

A friend of mine bought a pound of this "Royal Yacht Match" this past summer. I tried some and it was actually pretty damn good. Not very expensive, either. http://www.paylesspipes.com/search.php?q=royal+yacht+match&x=0&y=0 Check it out. BTW, if you call them and ask nicely, they might just...
