    Old Timer from Arkansas

Welcome aboard. BoB has a great mix of oldsters and younger smokers. Your knowledge will be appreciated.

    McClelland's St James Woods

Dittos. As mentioned, the two are very similar. 2015 is great stuff once it had been cellared for a few years. I am currently smoking from some I put down in 2005 and it is really fine stuff. I always order a couple tins of SJW with my Christmas Cheer and pop the top on one from time to time...

    What's a good winter smoke?

If I smoke English/Orientals at all, it is in the colder months. Last night I tried McC Wilderness for the first time and this will likely be my smoke of the night for the next few evenings. Other favorite English blends for colder evenings would include Dunhill Nightcap or London Mixture...

    McClellands Wilderness

Had my first bowl of Wilderness last evening. I am not a regular English/Oriental smoker but after reading all the hype about this one I had to pick up a tin at the local B&M and give it a try. If I was to become an Oriental smoker, this is the sort of blend that could lure me to it. I found...

    Seals for tobacco jars

You might try making your own using 100% silicone from the home center. I would only try this of both halves are glass, or if the lid is wood it is probably OK as well (YMMV). Spray both halves with cooking spray (Pam) to act as a release agent. Then put a bead of silicone in the groove or...

Rust inside of Samuel Gawith Tins

I would think that rust is a sign of something more ominous. In order to have rust, you need oxygen. O2 should not necessarily be present in tobacco of that age, and the rust process itself should have helped contribute to reducing the O2 even more (the oxygen absorbers they sell for preserving...

    Pandora Radio

I listen to Pandora off and on, not much recently. I honestly don't listen to near as much music as I used to. Find it distracting now when I work, and in the car it is all XM.

    Peterson's Irish Flake

Yep, good stuff. Good for a decent buzz.

    What's a good morning smoke?

Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Walnut. Any of the old codger American burleys are great first thing in the morning, especially with coffee.

    How to light my pipe

I'll chime in late here with a vote for the good old match. I always carry a standard Zippo with me, like money and a pocket knife, I never leave home without it. But my choice to light my pipe is a match, lets me hold the flame against the side of the bowl where sometimes I get a stubborn bit...

    What's with the ads?

Jason, thanks for getting rid of them, they weren't a lot of bother but nice not to have them.

What is the strongest heaviest English blend?

Go for it Piet. I'm still puffing at least a couple bowls a week of the fabled Walnut-weed. I've got your back until JP gets back from MIA!

What is the strongest heaviest English blend?

I wouldn't consider Walnut to be very strong, and it is barely an English although you can taste a bit of Lat in there. It is a nice twist on a the American burley (from Middletons), and can be a great all-day smoke. Most either love it or hate it, glad I am in the former. I would consider...

    Nicotine Content Rule of Thumb?

Time to build up your cellar!

    Nicotine Content Rule of Thumb?

It is great stuff Piet. Had a bowl Sunday night after a wonderful meal (thanks to Mrs. Hunter). Regardless of the full tummy, I still got a pretty good buzz from it, no sweats or anything uncomfortable, but I definitely knew the N was present.

    Stanwells AGAIN

I have 2 Stanwell brass band pipes that I picked up off of Ebay and they are both excellent smokers. The second one I got is a military mount where the 2nd band wraps all the way around the end of the shank to form the metal fitting. It smokes very dry and has a nice open draw. As such it has...

    Theory: hydrating tobacco with whiskey

I am not sure how much of the flavors in the liquor would be volatile enough to transfer to the tobacco. Winston amongst others has posted some recipes for using liquor and other liquids to flavor otherwise normal tobaccos. I think the method used was to spritz the tobacco, then let the alcohol...

    Does tobacco ever actually spoil?

I always assume that tobacco contains dormant mold spores. Even those that are steamed and stoved will have viable spores (as evidenced by cigars that are processed basically the same and can erupt into mold). So I always avoid high-temperatures with all of my stored tobacco and cigars. Jarred...

    Full Virginia Flake

Aaron, there are a lot of ways to resurrect dried out tobacco. I have not tried it myself but I see no reason why the steaming method described would not work. Usually if I have some that is past its prime, I just lay it out on a towel and give it a very light spritz with a spray bottle - easy...

Need info on a Nording with tight fit of stem

Yep, what Piet said. I had a Dunny with a stem so tight I was afraid I would snap the tenon right off. I used my pocked knife to scrape up a file of pencil lead and put on multiple applications, it eventually impregnates the wood of the shank and lets the tenon slide in quite nicely.
