So my mil gave me her great uncles Princeton graduation pipe from 1897. My question is should I smoke it or is this something that should just be put up for posterity? There are a few dark spots inside it but it doesn't appear to have been smoked.

Any input would be appreciated

Get it professionally mounted and framed for posterity. I'd say smoke it, but that is a treasure I'd be afraid of damaging.

Since it apparently hasn't been smoked before, as tempting as it would be, I have to agree to just display it

If it is clay, it may be even more vulnerable than if it were briar or meerschaum. As others have said, display it as an awesome conversation piece.

I agree with all the others. You have nothing to gain and a lot to lose by smoking it.

General opinion is hands off. I'm inclined to agree. Especially as the bowl is a good two and a half inches deep. Not sure I'd enjoy a solid 3 or 4 hour smoke. :geek:

Thanks guys
Jim

The only information I've been able to find on graduation pipes at Princeton is that they are smoked and then broken over a canon. To symbolize the ending of their time hanging out smoking and enjoying each others company. Odd tradition but then most are. So apparently having one intact is quite a find. Many thanks brothers. I would have really been kicking myself if I had smoked it and it broke.

This is good information. All the more reason to leave it unsmoked and turn it in to a beautiful mounted and framed piece of art.
