It's been a while since I posted anything or even looked at this page. Why you may ask? Well, it dawned on me that for a little while now I wasn't going outside to enjoy my pipe. But I was just going outside just to smoke my pipe. I wasn't paying attention to the flavor or the quality of the smoke. So I stepped back for a short while and waited until I was ready to enjoy the experience. Have any of you fellow pipers had the same experience?

Yes and no, I'm not a all day every day pipe pipe smoker so when I have a chance sit down and relax with a pipe it's a treat.

I'm lucky if I get out more than once a week for one smoke.

Smoking a pipe for me is never a thing I do out of habit or a need for a nic fix. I smoke for taste and pleasure. If I don't have the time to properly enjoy a pipe I don't, or if the bowl I've just lit isn't working for me taste-wise I either put it down for DGT or dump it out.

Fortunately I do all my pipe smoking inside so can choose the time and moment to suit my preferences. And sometimes it works out that my palate is not receptive for whatever reason. At that point there's no reason to continue just because the pipe is lit.

Just my ramblings FWIW.

Cheers,

RR

I smoke inside 98% of the time. And like Brewdude, I don't smoke out of habit. I want to enjoy every bowl of tobacco.

There is one thing I do not understand; I usually smoke my last pipe of the day at about 8pm, just before I go to bed. And almost every bowl I smoke then, tastes so good that I just can't put it down! I don't want to smoke for an hour or more at that time of the day, neither do I want to "chase" the smoke. That means that I go away from the pipe with a sad feeling in my heart :( because tomorrow it won't taste so good anymore

I can say yes to this one. There was a time when I slept even less than I do now. It wasn't unusual for me to smoke 12-18 hours a day non stop. After 8 months I realized what I was doing wasn't enjoyable so I cut back to 2 bowls a month. Now it's when the mood strikes whether that's daily, weekly, or monthly. Glad to hear you're enjoying your pipe time again.

I used to smoke me pips largely out of habit, then stopped for a few years, then restarted with the intention of only smoking when I could value the experience as a treat. So now I only smoke one or two bowls a day, keep half a dozen+ blends at the ready, and almost always smoke outside, no matter the weather. Usual pattern is a smoke at mid-afternoon, another to watch the stars come out. I've tended toward pipes with smaller bowls and mild to mid-strength tobaccos. I often fill the pipes in the morning and set them aside 'til the customary hours. I keep a piper's diary, which is a handy way to track the best combos of briar and tobacco. Tobaks I currently have available include EMP, 965, Old Dub, Epiphany, Uhle's Irish Aro, Plumcake, Virginia Flake, Bulls Eye, Mac B Va #1 and good ol' Price Albert. I just finished a bowl of 12-year-old Erinmore flake. I don't consider myself in a search for my perfect blend. Variety is good. Sometimes I skip a couple days just to keep an edge. I have about 50 pipes on the racks, everything from no-names to Dunhills. Also a passel of cobs and a couple meers. My assortment keeps me interested and coming back for more.

I don't step back intentionally, but 'life' often dictates that I'm away from the pipe for a while. The weather doesn't help either as I only smoke outside and have no cover. I've just had a run of a pair of weeks without a briar and whilst I didn't crave it I did find myself thinking it would be nice to enjoy a bowl from time to time. Definitely makes the next bowl more enjoyable and my cellar grows more too as I continue to buy as per normal. So, in sum, life seems to dictate those little breaks you speak of.

Yes, this happens to me on occasion and I believe it's formed just out of habit of having a bowl at a certain time of day. Some times I stop myself and ask do you really need a bowl or are you just doing it out of habit and I won't have one. I've been trying to have a bowl while in the shop working on things but, because I'm focused on what I'm doing I find I can smoke damn near all of it and not even be able to tell ya what I just smoked. I have to sit down without distractions and just enjoy a bowl or it just goes to waste as far as I'm concerned. I reckon I'm just not a multitasker.

This is the main reason I stopped smoking behind the wheel. I found that multi tasking provides so many distractions, that next thing I know the bowl is gone, and I never really got to enjoy it.

I also catch myself distracted with other things while smoking, so I try to be mindful that smoking provides relaxation when done properly.

Yeah, your right, driving takes too much concentration most the time to really enjoy a bowl too specially behind the wheel of a semi in traffic.

my smoking for the past 10 years has been seasonal. Late fall to early spring seem to have been my main smoking times. Rarely have I smoked during the summer. I smoked for a week while on vacation in June and then I didn't smoke again until I had a cigar or two in September and then didn't smoke again until a couple weeks ago. Even then it's not daily. If I smoke today it'll make 8 days in a row which I've never done though I'm currently not planning on smoking today so that streak may be broken today. I smoke for relaxation and pleasure. I've never really understood people being addicted to nicotine but again, i've never been a cigarette smoker so who knows. I'm a 'when the mood strikes me' smoker than a scheduled one.
