I recently hired Kaitlyn (kaitlyn3837) to clean up three well used pipes for me and here are the results.

My only regret is that I did not snap a before picture. The bent billiard, my very first pipe that I got when I was 18 was horribly abused and the stem was milky green and grey.

Thanks Kaitlyn. Lovely work. 8)

Some nice looking work there ! Who is the maker of that nice looking Pot?

Michael, it's a Digby.

Not sure why it ended up a GBD factory second as it smokes just as good as my GBD pot..

Though most folks consider Digby's a second of GBD's, they were made from the same briar that was cured the same as the "firsts" only they did not have as nice a grain and usually had fills which the pre-Codagan 'firsts" did not. They are a GBD all the way and will smoke as good as a "first" IMHO and that's one heck of a nice looking pot !

Great work on some lovely pipes! They look ready for the showroom floor.

Thanks. Yeah, must be the grain that didn't pass muster, as this particular Digby is 100% free of fills. 8)

Yeah, I have a Charatan second bent pot, a real one from the '70s. I know, because I also had the original that it's a second of, same shape, etc. It's just an evaluation thing, probably just the appearance of the grain. If it's a "real" second, the pipes are identical in smoking quality.

Looks like Kaitlyn did a really great job. The bent is a what? Algerian briar, right? Looks almost identical to an Edward's I have.

Rick,

The only markings on the bent billiard read "Algerian Briar Made in France." I guess it could be another factory second, but I think it's probably a nicely shaped basket pipe. The stem is quite nice though. There's some nice birdseye and cross grain but a number of fills too. It did have a stinger which was easy to remove and set aside. It wasn't glued in place. The drilling and internals seem well done. It was a good first briar pipe, a helluva lot better than some folks start with.

:lol!: Man, you got that right! I spent the first decade of my pipe-smoking life with my tongue on life-support.

Oh man, I fried my tongue too.. I just looked fancy doing it. :p

That's some impressive restoration work for certain! Not as easy as some folks might think.

Thanks for all the encouragement, guys! I'm just stoked when I can restore a pipe for someone and give it new life. Enjoy the pipes and thanks for the shout out, my friend!

Fair play Kaitlyn, that's impressive work. They look brand new! I've never tried it but I'm guessing there's more to it than you might first imagine.

Trust me, when I got them back, especially the bent billiard I was like  !

It pays to know talented people. 8)
