Hi, I'm new to site. I am 70 y/o now, started smoking pipe at 11 y/o then stopped for many years. Started up again at 70. Bought my first pipe a Peterson, Smoked cool , no bite, no real break in. So I bought my second pipe a Peterson, smoked hot, doesn't seem to want to break in, and you almost need an oven mitt to hold. Same company, same price about $100. Why the difference? I am lost on what brand to get next. Any suggestions on a pipe for about $100, maybe a Oom Paul type, that would smoke cool?
So many brands, I have no clue. When I was a kid a Kaywoodie was a top brand , now there seems to be hundreds of brands.

Welcome, Doc!

Please come back often and join in.

I've got pipes from the same company that smoke differently, it happens. Some pipes seem to prefer certain types and/or cuts of tobacco, and smoke better (and cooler) with them.

In that price range, I usually lean toward Savinelli. I think for the price, they're about the best value around. Of course there are several other very good selections in that price range, but my Sav's have never disappointed or let me down.

I'm sure other will chime in with more opinions and advice soon.

I like eric nording for that price. Big bowls and normally thick briar so it is hard to overheat them.

Don't give up on your second Pete! Could be that you lucked out and got an exceptional piece of briar for your first Pete and maybe the second just needs a bit more time to break in. I'm sure it will end up smoking just fine after a while.

My most recent Pete, a Shannon 03 Fishtail, took a while to break in too. Give it time and if it get's hot, slow down. 8)

As some have said, you might need to slow down your smoking speed a bit, but I'm sure your recalcetrant Pete will "get in line" with time :p I noticed you live in Worcester, Mass. so you might want to take a trip to Boston in your search for another pipe and stop in at L.J.Peretti's there. ( here's a link to their website : http://www.ljperetti.com/index.html ) and take a look at what they have to offer, both pipe wise (VERY GOOD pipes) as well as tobacco ( I smoke their Royal Blend as my daily smoke). Take your time and enjoy :p

My 305 Pete smokes hot: but only if I really start puffing along. If I slow down and relax (as with most of my pipes), heat is never an issue.

I really love my Mastro de Paja and my recent Soren Refbjerg.

I bet your second Pete was dip stained, the first probably wasn't. That would explain the difference in break-in period. As for the heat I wonder if its not just a difference in the shape of the bowl.

This is probably correct.

As for the heat, I know that on occasion whether it be a rough break-in period or simply looking too hard for flavor in a tobacco that isn't there, I puff a bit too hard causing heat. I pretty sure once you get through that break-in period you'll naturally be able to get what you're looking for flavor wise and heat won't be a problem

My Peterson Shannon that my Secret Santa gave me last year was the same way. I actually sanded the inside of the bowl (brand new pipe, mind you) in order to remove that stain. Of course you don't have to do this, but that's something I've always done and probably will continue to do before I ever smoke a new pipe with stain inside of the bowl.

As far as the heat, I've found that once you get a decent carbon layer built up, this will help to insulate the bowl - making it a little cooler to hold on to. But - slowing down a little made the biggest difference for me.
