This Aldo Velani pipe was a kind gift from Paul Harris. Once again, thank you very much Paul, it was a very thoughtful and kind gift.
Why I have no idea but this pipe has a coloured varnish on the stummel, see picture below:
As you can see it was a ghastly 'orange' tinge in the varnish, bad enough they put varnish on a pipe stummel in the first place, but an orange tinge, oh please. In accordance with Paul's suggestion I removed the varnish and waxed the stummel.
I stripped off the original varnish using wet & dry sandpaper then fine sanded the stummel to remove the scratches the wet & dry made. Next I gave it a light dousing of a dark red/brown stain, this was immediately washed off using some ISO, just lightly removed the surface stain but leaving enough to leave a nice rich brown tone.
