An interesting observation tongue bite and filter adapters

So I have this Stefano bent dublin that I have had for a while and smoke occasionally (mostly with McClelland's 2015). Its fitted for a 9mm filter, but I have never actually smoked it with one. It has always been a bit of a pain to clean so I thought I would give a filter adapter a try to see if that helped. I put the adapter in, put the pipe back in the cabinet and forgot about it for a couple of months. The other night I decided to smoke a little 2015 and broke out the Stefano.

When I first lit the pipe I knew there was something wrong. At first I thought it was my packing, the draw was funky and the pipe wasn't giving off much smoke. I also noticed quickly that my tongue started to burn a good bit, and I rarely ever get tongue bit. At some I remembered that I had the filter adapter in there, I immediately took it out (I know, I know, I shouldn't have removed the stem while the pipe was hot, but I did). Instantly the problem was solved. The tongue bite was gone, never to rear its ugly head again and the draw was right as it should be.

You ought to try some of those 9mm Savinelli balsa filters in there if you're curious about trying filters. Not paper one-timers, less resistance too.

That adapter just had/created too tight of a draw.

Four of the Sav's I have were meant to use filters and when I bought 'em the B&M I bought them at threw in the "adaptors" if I did not want to use the filters. I never smoked 'em with either the filters or adaptors and they smoked like a champ. Nice open draw and I can "breath" smoke 'em like I can my Charatans. ( the "... missdrilled, Golf Club" pipes :twisted: ) Just my experience :twisted:

*shrug* Filter adapters haven't been a good thing with me, so I've gotten rid of all but one 9mm filter pipe. The weird, blue and white briar Hilson "Shark" if any you recall that oddity.

I use a 9mm adapter in it, but I've edited it...it now sports chamfered features on both sides of the draft hole. It works, makes it about equal to the open, filterless smoke.

Not much can be done about the restriction, but all hail an open draw. Funny that tongue-bite can result from just one silly variable. Makes ya wonder.

I have a Savinelli with 9mm balsa system. I do like it for tins with ribbon cut that I have not pre-opened to dry out. Typically Dunhill tins and even McClelland tins freshly open can be smoked without the slurp surprise with 9mm balsa. I usually swap it after 3-4 bowls.
