Noticed SP.com put up 6 new McC blend/mixtures ( at least new to me) on their site and was wondering if any of my fellow ketchup lovers have tried any of 'em ?  One looks to be a ribbon all Va mixture and two look to be Aros, and two English/Balkan style mixtures, but the one that looks the best to me ( and I'm going to add a tin of next mo.) is the Red and Black which described as being " ...  not a blend. It is in fact two different flakes, tinned together to marry with age, yet still each provide their own distinct smoke. They are, as the name implies, a matured red Virginia flake, and a dark, stoved Virginia flake, living together in captivity. "  Of course these will all be covered with the requisite amt of that famous KC condiment. KETCHUP !!   AaaaaH some tobacco that is available to purchase ! What will they think of next !

A buddy sent me a tin of the Red and Black.

Think 5100 not rubbed out much and somewhere half way between Dark Star and Navy Flake...

Low and sweet. I like it.....

Ozark, just curious but are they Red then Black va flakes interspersed one then the next in the tin? If so sounds like you could smoke 'em mixed or one type at a time giving you TWO blend/mixtures in one tin !!

Dunno if this helps but TB once had a house blend called Red and Black about 10 yrs ago. Seems to me it was Red 'ginny flake and something not quite Latakia, but smoky. Perhaps this is it?

McC says it's just two Va Flakes one a flue cured Red Va and the other a Dark Stoved  Va flake, nothing about any other variety of 'baccy in it! ( except of course McC's requisite dose of ketchup they add to everything   )

I did get to smoke a bowl of the TB R&B in around '01/'02, from the generosity of a brewery partner who smokes a pipe. It made a favorable impression on me, but I didn't follow up on trying to get any in.

Just have to wonder if this was the blend in question on this thread.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone ever tried to contact McClelland with questions about their products?

I have done so twice, and never received a reply.

I seem to remember from a past thread that Scottie has an in with someone at pipe club that gave up some info on 5100.

If this blend is anything like 5100 and 2035 together it sounds great, but I won't bite unless it's bulk (doesn't sound like it).

Or you could put all the Red in one appropriate flake pipe, and all the Black in another appropriate flake pipe, get both of them lit simultaneously, and alternate back and forth between the two.

Sipping of course! ;)
