Anyone use a pipe lighter insert for a Zippo?

I've heard conflicting reports on whether Zippo will still swap out for a pipe insert if you send in to their repair center. I sent one in a couple weeks ago and am waiting to see what comes back.

I use one, my lighter of choice is/was a Corona Old Boy. But any breeze is too much for it. Then I tried a Zippo pipe lighter insert - it's great in breezy weather. And, as a matter of fact, it has become maybe as preferred as the Old Boy. It's just so easy to use. I initially had the opinion the fluid smell would be awful and the Zippo wouldn't be a good alternative to butane. It's not distracting at all – the Zippo is a great option.

Got my lighter back from the repair center today and they did the swap. Even gave me the gold-flashed insert so it better matches the case color, which is a nice touch. I've seen responses from the customer service desk that official policy is to not do the swaps now that they sell the pipe insert on its own, but either they're still doing it under the table or I just got lucky.

My late Pap used one of these IIRC, and I've been curious about them. Have me a Zippo I seldom use, but no pipe lighter insert.

Any advice gratefully received, and thanks for your consideration. And where might I pick one of these up?

Great thread Bd, I have learnt so much from everyone's posts. I like using my zippos but I almost have to fill them every time I want to use them and the fluid smell doesn't really bother me. I bought a pipe zippo but believe it or not I threw away the insert/cap while on a pipe smoking playstation playing bender. It must have fell out on the floor and I just thought it was trash

I have only heard the word nimrod as a derogatory remark for actions like the above sentence. But I will be in the market for a butane insert and nimrod as I never knew they existed and would be like a rat with a gold tooth when I get them thanks

I carry 2 Zippo pipe lighters all the time.
1 has the Zippo pipe insert the other has the Vector Thunderbird for butane. If either one is empty or if the wind conditions change I switch up.
A trick I have used for years with the regular Zippo to stop evaporation is

It wasn't for dramatic pause.....
I add a piece of bicycle inertube around the gap. It seals it and stops evaporation.
Just roll it down to use and when finished roll it back up. It will keep the regular Zippo filled for a long time. Pretty much stops evaporation.

I have three of them. One was a very tight fit to replace the original insert. Also they are a tad restrictive it you are left handed as the cover open in one direction. But you get used to it. I don’t often use them as I’d prefer OldBoys and others types.

I have several, some I bought and some that were gifts. I just find it annoying to sit down to light my pipe to find it needs refillling, so I have to get up and go fiddle with liquid to refill it.
For my use, butane is less messy, always works as I can see the fluid level inside, and I avoid the Naphtha flavor the zippo fluid gives to the tobacco.
Grandpa used them because it was more convenient in the 60's than using matches. It's the 21st century now. I've moved on to less messy and more reliable butane.

The only practical use I've found for zippos in the modern world is collecting, and for carrying to the field for the purpose of trading to the German kids in exchange for a case of beer. A $15 zippo in exchange for a case of beer after you've been sleeping in a tent in the woods for 30 days is a bargain!

I got my Zippo pipe lighter on Amazon, for $21 I think. They sell the inserts separately, if you're attached to your case design.

I found the Zippo brand fluid to have less smell than the Ronson.

And by less I mean basically none. Occasionally I'll notice it if I don't let it burn for a second, but usually I don't even think about waiting and almost never notice it.

I've only tried the Zippo brand - but the Zippo with a pipe insert has become a favorite. If I travel I may not cary anything but. I've found carrying it in a small mylar zip when I pack it helps it keep a fill.

Just recently purchased one of each (butane and traditional) inserts to see which I like better. Will test them out today. One thing I already see with the butane is there is no flame adjustment and it has a pretty big flame.

I've tried both of the Zippo inserts along with the Z-Plus piezo insert. None of them are perfect, I liked the Z-Plus.
