Hey guys, I am saving up for my next pipe, which I hope will be a Boswells. However, I've spent a good amount of time since I took up the hobby looking for pipemakers in the UK, and specifically smaller producers as I love the freehand or artisan style of pipes. I haven't really had much luck, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for UK pipe makers I should take a look at? Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

NB: If you have a recommendation for non-uk artisan type pipe makers I'd love to hear about them too, I'm just a bit concerned about importing

advice from Light Yagami is advice I'd be a fool to ignore :)

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out

I have a number of pipes which he has refurbished. He also makes pipes and sells them through his eBay account.

I own a 683 Oval Moose and it is a good smoker, and excellent value for money. Apparently he has specials which he only sells at his shop so it may be worth taking a trip to Litchborough if you get the chance.

You can see how he makes his pipes on youtube https://www.youtube.com/user/BlakemarBriars

Those David Irving pipes are really quite interesting.

If you visit London then I would recommend Millville pipes.

They only sell their pipes from the stall they have in St James Market in Piccadilly and don't have a website.

Their pipes start at only £15 but they certainly do very upmarket freehands. The last time I visited their stall they had a stunning straight grain, very large freehand that came in it's own wooden case. Unfortunately it was in excess of £600 so a little above my budget for pipes!!!

But I do have one of their smallish pot shapes that cost only £40. It has good grain and has been a great smoker from the very first bowl so I can only presume that their more expensive models are excellent.

An utter gentleman, and stunning pipes.

I will have one, if not this year, next year.

Perhaps in the same genre, I have been in search of (for years now) some pipes by Abbey of London. I lost my bent bulldog many years ago and Abbey ceased production about seven or eight years ago. Impossible to find.
If any surface, brothers, please let me know.

I'll give a +1 to Chris Askwith. Just picked mine up from the post office no more than 15 minutes ago. Flawless craftsmanship all around. A nice guy too.

I guess you don't fully understand the amount of time and effort it takes to snap a crappy picture and send it to my computer... Really Kyle, I'm a busy man.

Just for you though.

See? Not so difficult. You pass. :D

(Cool pipe, very unique... I'd be concerned about a charred bowl rim...)

I thought about that too. Guess I'll have to be extra careful.

Getting pipes into the UK by post is generally no problem. You might pay some duty, but they go right through, there's no restrictions.

That said, Chris Askwith is a nice enough guy. Pipes are ugly pieces of crap (not enough Sasquatch influence), but no one's perfect.

Yeah I didnt think pipes would be blocked or stopped at customs, I was more worried about how much duty I'd have to pay on it, whether it might get knocked about on route or lost entirely. I'll be trying it on my next pipe and see if any problems arise. But there are good things to be said for supporting your local artisans too.

Well there has to be some reason people buy Chris's pipes! :D
