No, not Christmas

-begin tale of woe-

So, I should be in New Orleans right now as usual over Christmas, but I'm not. My left knee has been bothering me when driving for the last few weeks (slightly arthritic, hardly surprising I suppose, and there just aren't many comfortable positions in the car for it). Last Thursday and Friday, I was rushing around, finishing up the semester's work, packing, moving some heavy things to get to luggage, etc. and walking a bit more than usual to bleed off nervous energy, and over-strained that knee, not that I paid any attention to that.

Well, Friday night, as I was getting ready to shower, the knee gave out and I fell, spraining it (that I certainly paid attention to! No damage was done to anything other than the knee, btw). It was v painful, to say the least. However, it has been examined, x-rayed, etc., and no long-term damage was done (everything is still correctly attached, no fluid, etc.). So, two weeks of limited walking as it mends, and limited driving as well, so no trip to NO to see the boss lady for the holidays. I'll likely go over spring break for a shorter trip instead. While the range of motion is currently down, most of the pain is gone (unless I move it in the wrong direction) but it is still weak, so I just have to rest it. It easily could have been a lot worse! Getting older is usually a pain in the butt; this time, it's a pain in the knee.

-end of self-pity-

In any case, that's why I'm still hanging about here as much as usual, instead of my usual limited access over the holiday. At least this holiday, I'll be able to get ahead of my reading!

DrT, hope you feel better soon!! YES, getting older is no picnic for sure! Have a very HAPPY & HEALTHY HOLIDAY SEASON. I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery. May the New Year bring us ALL Health and Happiness. Don't over do it and your knee will heal much better. Let someone else do the cooking this year and you just enjoy more of your favorite tobacco's

KEEP ON PUFFING!!!

Ghastly luck there Doc. Might be worth giving your early morning runs a miss for a few weeks too. ?

Hope things improve for you soon. ..

Awwww man! Sorry! Injuries around the holidays are the worst. Let me know if there anything I can do.

Thanks, brothers. Stick, I can assure you I haven't run in decades. 8) I do usually walk 17,000-24,000 steps a day, that will be under 5,000 for the next 7-10 days

Best wishes on your recovery. Take care of how you get around and please exercise caution while vertical...

DrT that sucks. I feel your pain as I also have some issues associated with ageing.

Hope you can overcome this soon and be back in the game sooner than later.

Cheers,

RR

I sure do understand your pain. I've had a shoulder and a hip replaced. I use a cane outside.Doc says I should make sure I don't fall..Hope you are better soon.

Attitude adjustment...we're dang lucky to feel as good as we do.

Have a merry little Christmas, Doc.
Got a prescription anti-inflammatory, and considering how bad it could have been, I really got off lucky!

Thanks, Puffy. Be careful out there!

Ouch Doc that sounds painful, at least you've a good excuse to put your feet up and puff on a pipe.

Get better quickly.

Cheers

Tim

Gee whiz Professor, Bah Humbug doesn't even begin to express your dilemma. I think your unfortunate circumstance deserves a very loud Ahhh SH*t! Hopefully you'll have a speedy recovery my friend. :)

Doc I am truly sorry to hear about your knee and how it foiled your holiday plans.  I wish you a speedy recovery.  Its never fun to deal with aches and pains, but it really stinks when it is so uncomfortable that you have to change the way you live ( even if temporary) .  As much as it sucks be thankful that it is only temporary as no serious damage was done and also that it happened at home and you weren't out of town and got stranded, or forced to drive the distance home while being in as much pain.  I know it would never be able to reach you by Christmas but could I send you a "get well soon" package?  I have done this for other members in the past, I like to help brighten days in dark stressful times.  Hang in there Doc. Im rooting for you to have a full recovery!

Thanks, Timbo & AJ. I wish I had a nice place to sit and smoke; I smoke while walking 'round the apartment complex (temporarily not really realistic). Smoking outside while standing is putting too much stress on the other leg; so I'll just roll down a window and smoke in the car (my wife dislikes that I do that, but I'll have to March to fully air it out so she hopefully won't notice). Oh, and AJ, I believe those were my exact words when it happened.

Thistleoak; thanks for the kind offer. As you point out, this time of year it would take some time to arrive, and the days really aren't that dark or stressful. Considering some of the things some of the members here deal with/have dealt with, this is merely very annoying and just a bit achy. I posted mostly to kvetch; sharing annoyances with friends helps! :D

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Doc. Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy getting down there this spring. As one of my retired NYPD friends says "Just don't get caught with the dancing girls and all will be right as rain in no time."

Thanks; it's about 90% recovered. I'm sure I'll have to be careful for quite a while, though
