I lost my first "good" pipe (a nice Danish Freehand) back in the early 70s to a porcupine. I paid over $70 for it, which as a college student back then was a huge amount of money. We were paddling through a fine series of lakes along the Wisconsin/UP border and I left it out one night (too much brandy) and went to bed. In the morning the mouthpiece was basically intact, but that large, beautiful chunk of wood was a pile of shavings.

You should see what they do to toilet seats in outhouses in the north-country if you forget to latch the door. They love to chew and the salt of the seat is a drug to them (no comments necessary, they are a different kind of animal than we are, you know!). Butt sweat....mmmmmmmmm
