Hi guys, as some of you may know I work in some extreme temperatures (melting steel) and outdoors in a lot of weather (plus E. Texas humidity). I have taken up a new habit of bringing a single cob with me to work and a pouch of Carter Hall to kill the time. I average about 4-5 bowls during my work day which is 8-12 hours. I try to keep the cob dry, which is a little hard since I prefer bent pipes and I clench my cobs in my mouth. I was wondering if I should expect any adverse smoking effects in my cobs in the long term, I rotate the two cobs I have every other day and wipe them down with Everclear at the end of each day. I love my briars too much to take them into the pit of hell that my occupation brings me. I'd like to hear some opinions and input from some of you more senior pipe smokers, namely blue collar working class guys that take a single pipe for an all day outing!

Since they're cheap, I think the cob is the right option... they DO like to be dry, though, and they're also prone to soaking up moisture.

Perhaps a few more cobs, have about five (for the workweek) to rotate? *shrug* Seems to make sense to me! I romp around in the desert for work, and I don't smoke much in the field, but I have a cob handy in case the mood strikes me. Can't think of a better companion.

I think you're on the right track with cobs, but why not add three more to your rotation. If you smoke your briars on the weekends and evenings, the cobs will then each get a full week of rest before going back to work, and they'll thank you for it by lasting longer and tasting sweeter.

Ill pick up another cob today. Im almost out of pipe cleaners and CH anyway, any suggestions on which model would make the ideal work horse?

There is a guy on ebay who buys old cheap briar (Kaywoodie, Medico, Grabow, etc) cleans them up well (but a bit rough) and then sells them in the $10-20 range. I bought a Kawyoodie that I use for testing out aros. If your interested PM and I'll check my ebay account for his info.

Cobs are perfect for your needs, and I would suggest the Pride, which is small, or the Great Dane Spool or Diplomat if you want something larger. And yes, a five cob rotation will allow each cob to rest, which will also help them last longer. Using pipe cleaners while smoking should take care of any moisture issues. You might benefit from reading both my Primer and Buying guide.

I've read your work, I'm a big fan. Ive always taken your advice to heart. Cobs are always in my rotation due to my attempt to live an active lifestyle. I reserve my briers for indoor and more "passive" activities.

I would order 10 ponies. The lil buggers are awesome. I love my lil pony. (sorry, couldnt help myself)
But seriously I punted mine down a flight of hard stairs and she still smokes like a champ.
They are good for a 15-20 min. smoke I would say.
