I have often heard people talk about different pipe shapes, chamber depths/widths, and even pipe companies that different tobaccos smoke best in. Most of the time this includes Va's and English blends, but I don't hear much in the way of Burleys, save for the people that enjoy them in a cob. In the way of briar pipes though, what do you guys think? What pipes do Burleys smoke best in for you? Larger bowls? Smaller bowls? A certain shape? A certain brand? Just curious to hear what Burley lovers think since I need to purchase more pipes in the near future to dedicate to Burley blends.

Thanks,
Scott

No idea if I'm "missing out" on some other chamber shape, but my 3/4" wide or so, taller bowls seem to work well. Wider, but taller, bowls I've noticed increase the "alkali burn" on the tongue, likely because there's simply more tobacco burning at a different rate than in a slowly-smoked, mid-sized-but-taller bowl. Cobs seem to have the right diameters overall, and work well in that instance, so I'm among those that enjoy Burley in a good cob. 8)

Burley is the only type of tobacco that I will just throw into a pipe of any shape or size. Usually it is a cob, but I've smoked it in most of my briars too. Also, its the only type of tobacco I dont have a pipe dedicated to. Latley, I have been throwing Solani Burley Flake into a cob that has a wicked aro ghost.
When in doubt use a cob :)

I smoke a lot of burleys. Over time I have found that for me, tall bowls like billiard, brandy, etc. work much better than squat bowls like bulldogs, rhodesians, etc.

The reason I have come to this conclusion is that I absolutely love that last third of a bowl of burley. To me, this is where it shines. If you like lighter tastes, you may want to try just about anything. I smoke hairy chest burleys like Big & Burley, Burley flake #2 etc.

Not being a big afficianado of Burley heavy tobacco's I don't devote ANY size or shape of pipe to them. But then, devoting a pipe to just one type of tobacco is WAAAAY to OCD for me :p I smoke ALL of my blends in ANY pipe I have and get as much pleasure from ALL. I know I'm one of those "old guys" who are not as discerning as today's younger crowd, but it's worked for over 40 years of pipe smoking for me so what the **** :p

I tend to go with larger pipes for my burlies, briars along with cobs and meers. By larger I mean with an inside bowl depth of 2-3" and 3/4-7/8" inside diameter. Of course burley is good in short bowled pipes as well so there appears to be a wide range of pipe styles that burn burlies well. I love it in bulldogs, pears, apples and squat mushroom shapes. I've got a gourd calabash and a briar calabash that love burley.

I'm sorry, but I think all this stuff about pipes especially suited for thus and so tobacco is just pure cr*p!

But I realize that there are others of you have must be more attentive to these differences and have carefully observed trends among their pipe and tobacco pairings.

But I notice nothing! Nothing! Nothing! And thus reading your observations is like sipping swill from a straw, dipping refrigerator scum from the bottom pan and snuffing it, smearing my hands in cat box effluvia.

Stop it! You're making me sick! Stop!

LOL, always nice to see someone speak their mind. Just out of curiosity, how would Tambolaka smoke in an Ardor Super Giant

I smoke burley in about anything. I find it does well in a large bowl because it is low sugar therefore none bitey, but any pipe will do. The cut of a tobacco determines what bowl size/shape more than anything else. Aside from that, something I find extra strong or bitey will go in a small bowl.

See? I smoke burlies in just about anything.

I think burley smokes well in anything and everything.

I have an old Yello-Bole billiard that I found NOS on ebay that I use for burleys. Something about smoking Prince Albert in a 75 year old cheap billiard just seems fitting.

I'm just going to keep posting stuff like this to watch poor Alfredo find more melodramatic and creative ways to express his displeasure. It's a real artform.

With that, Burleys should ALWAYS and ONLY go in narrow-gauge, tall-bowled cobs, period. End of story. Always. Until death. You can quote me on that, Google and Internets, for I am the only pipe smoker in the world, ever.
