Gorgeous Kaywoodie. I often forget there was a high end line in the old company. $114.50 was steal.

Kaywoodie stringers never bothered me. I like the screw mechanism as it is similar in function to my favorite military stems. I use stringer pipes with my occasional aromatic smoke - non-stringers/no filters for my usual English and Vapers.

That is a super 59 shape and unsmoked Matched Grain pipes are not easy to find for sure. The price realized was pretty much in line in my opinion. Being a collector of this make I would be proud to have it in my rack for sure. Thanks for showing the listing.

I'm not a Kaywoodie expert, but I do know that back in the day, they were priced about the same as Dunhills.

Live and learn. Briar Blues has one much rougher than this one for about the same price, so maybe this was a real deal for someone. I've only had one Kaywoodie, one I reluctantly "loaned" to a friend while fishing off a bridge somewhere north of Willow, Alaska many years ago. Guess what happened. The bast...the guy spotted a huge king salmon beneath us and, as he screamed like a girl and pointed, he let the pipe drop from his mouth into the river and I watched it tear away downstream. And as I remember it wasn't that bad a smoker, with Granger "rough cut," of all things. The last pipe I will ever loan, for more reasons than one.

That is one reason that I love smoking cobs when I'm fishing!!! Watching the cob float down the river isn't such a harrowing experience in comparison to losing a fine briar.

Richard,

Sorry to hear about the one that got away ... ;)

I bought a Kaywoodie from an estate sale years ago at Uhle's for about $15. Believe it or not, one of my prized pipes until the stem broke last week ... :(

Some people love Kaywoodies, I'm among them and I would love to have that pipe. On a side note, I have observed that Kaywoodie prices are up on ebay lately. The work must be out.

Hey Churchwarden... Hopefully you kept the pieces. If it was simply the stem that broke, a fix is easy. There are people who can repair broken mortise/tenon joints as well.

I'd bet that is a push stem handmade Kaywoodie, with no stinger.
I handled a few at Park Lane in NY a few weeks ago. This blasted Rhodesian really caught my eye and nearly my wallet at $160. It was incredibly well made. But, they were all really large pipes, too large for my tastes.
In NYC at the Pipe club meeting, two guys were smoking handmades from the recent Kaywoodie slow smoke contest. Both said the pipe was terrific. These aren't the Kaywoodies you could pick up at the corner drugstore.

Right click on the picture (using Firefox) than scroll down to "view image info". Copy the string at the "Location" line. Click on the "image" icon (7th icon from the right). Past the image string into that box, press "OK" and viola, you have a picture!

These are a few of my older Kaywoodies. I only use them for flakes they smoke great . The fire one is a suntan that was manufactured between 1932-1938. The second two are both drinkless manufactured 1931 or earlier.

Wow, those are lovely. I would get a lot of satisfaction owning and smoking a pipe made in the '30's. Those are beauties!
As a classic American pipe maker, a Kaywoodie needs to be on my rack soon.

Thanx guys! I was able to do it, but I have to be here for a week before I'm allowed to post external links. :(
