It is and was a favorite of mine and was easy to get back when I switched to English blands in 2005. Then in 2010 I took a break from pipes and cigars and came back to it last year and alas it is pretty hard to get a hold of now. So what happened? The factory never changed sizes or went out of business. What caused the Great Penzance Panic that caused everyone to hoard it and buy it out within minutes of availability and the crazy second hand prices?

I'm sure it's the same with FVF and any number of tobaccos that gain notoriety. It's obtaining what others are in search of. For a while, FVF wouldn't stay on the shelves, but now I see it available quite frequently. People are always in search of what they can't find...

I've never tried Penzance, but I recently bought a 2oz tin from Peretti's when it was available to give it a try when the mood hits me. Personally, I don't worry about hoarding any blend of tobacco. There is plenty of good attainable blends to satisfy me when the urge strikes. Now if I heard a favorite blend was going to be taken off of the market in the near future, I guess I could see buying a bit up. But to each they're own... if folks have the money and want to buy up 10lbs of a tobacco blend, more power to them.

Just a fab at best and to tell ya the truth Jack, your not missing much.
Had some awhile back that was gifted to me by a good friend and it aint any better then Dunhill 965 as far as I'm concerned. Now Pembroke is pretty good, it's real smooth and not as Lat forward as I see the Penzance as but, what the hell do I know, my opinions aren't worth anything. ;)

I have enough stored for now and get it when I can at good prices. I was just wondering what happened.

A while back the Pipes Magazine Radio Show interviewed Premal Chheda from Smoker's Haven and he spoke a little bit about this as Germain makes all of the Smoker's Haven house blends. In short, J. F. Germain cannot meet the demand for several of their blends with-out running the risk of sacrificing quality so they refuse to do so. According to Premal they are a very small operation. That said, I don't think demand will let up because supply is not going to increase, so get it when you can.

I dont have any dunhills right now nor do I have any burnt out pipes. I am just not fond of burly blends or cobs. I do have a cob I use once and a while. There are pleanty of other blends out there if I run out of Penzance and cant get it any longer and do think for myself. This is a taste that I acquired in 2005 after 6 years of smoking. Now it is almost 17 years since I started smoking. Wow time flies.

Color me a newbie, but I enjoy Carter Hall in a cob with coffee... :p

However, I don't think Pabst Blue Ribbon is good beer, so perhaps there's hope for me.. ;)

Ha ha i'm not insulting any of you guys especially the OP tarheel who explained how he took a break from penzance to find it all gone I was just answering your question tar about why you can't get it anymore

No problem. Think you were saying it is the Hipsters fault for taking our beloved tobacco. Since none of us here are hipsters it is all good. Why do they have to make everything a fad and ruin it for the rest of us that were doing it way before they were out of diapers or elementary school. Yes i was only 18 or 19 when I started smoking a pipe, but I was in the military and was looking for something other than cigarettes that everyone else smoked. I wanted something with flavor that smelled good.

Damn hipsters.

There's not really any such thing as a hipster...it's just used a way of classifying people today who all follow the same trends in fashion, music, food whatever. They are called hipsters today, but were called countless other names in every other generation...always the same just people not thinking for themselves

The hipster subculture is one of affluent or middle class young Bohemians who reside in gentrifying neighborhoods,[1][2] broadly associated with indie and alternative music, a varied non-mainstream fashion sensibility (including vintage and thrift store-bought clothes), generally progressive political views, organic and artisanal foods, and alternative lifestyles.[3][4][5] The subculture typically consists of white millennials living in urban areas.[6][7] It has been described as a "mutating, trans-Atlantic melting pot of styles, tastes and behavior"

Its the people being mainstream while believing they are not main stream. The young crowd that made a crappy water downed beer popular because it was not popular

I actually have a couple of nephews that fit into this category, they look like young, yuppie, lumberjacks.

They're good kids though. If I was their age, I'd probably look just like them.

When I was in high school, hipsters were the older kids who lived in williamsburg, wore vintage clothes and listened to no wave bands. they certainly didn't dress like the guys in those pictures...ya know who did? Gay dudes. I'm pretty sure nowadays hipster just means a straight dude with a beard in a gay guys wardrobe

It's funny though there's a million threads on PSF and reddit smoke lounge by posters complaining about hipsters ruining pipe smoking...meanwhile the posters all have beards, flannel and fedoras in the profile pictures haha

but in essence all these guys complaining about hipsters..theyve got your penzance

Jeans, boots, and flannel or denim shirts have pretty much been my wardrobe since high school. And I generally have had facial hair of some sort, even when I was in the military and law enforcement. So maybe I was a first generation hipster and didn't even know it.

maybe ha flannel has been pretty common since the early 90's so no need to blame yourself

Not everyone that has facial hair is a hipster. Hell I have a beard right now, but it is for a reason. Many of my brothers from the military also have beards. None of us are hipsters. And it is usually the flannel with the skinny jeans that makes me laugh.

I'm pretty sure EVERYONE has a beard right now...even the ladies...it's really common...whats trendy is the long bushy beard. I've got a beard...I hate it i like scruff...but i'm lazy and that's why i've got one.

Our Hipsters look like that but add in bull rings and a sort of human pin cushion look with lots of very unfortunate ink. The deal with Penzance is that during your time away the brand that had been carefully managed (butera) was sold to a large tobacco wholesaler (arango) who just needs to move product. As the hobby has aged and shrunk internet hype is increasing and always revolving. Hang tight the hot stuff changes really fast.
