You had better get it for a song. The trouble is, there is no way to tell what the condition of the bowl is in. It could be close to a burnout, who knows. Still, if you don't mind some serious rim scorching there is a lot you can do to fix 'er up. I'd say $30 max.

I bet it can. The build-up on the rim is cracked, but I suspect that is tobacco not the wood. At any rate, it could be sanded smooth and restained. I could do it for you if you decide to get it. The stem looks in good shape, just needs the oxidation removed and polished. I bet it goes cheap, less than $50, why not. Let me know if I can help.

Hard to tell, isn't it? It's that crack that seems to all the way across the rim that has me worried. I've requested more info from the seller but gotten no response yet. I have some experience with sanding burnt rims, just not one this bad. Of course, with the bowl as tall as it is, there would be some leeway.

Woof. That thing has seen some cockeyed matches or lighting for a while, huh?

Looks like the rim has been pretty abused. I don't personally think it's excess caking. If you take her on, you have some work ahead of you, and I don't think you're gonna come up with a chiseled-edge bowl--unless you work the bowl past the char and give it an even shape.

It might smoke fine.

I agree, $30 would be my max. Fine pipe, otherwise.

What the heck? I'm in! Keep your eyes on DIY for a "This Olde Pete" thread in the near future. (assuming I win) If I find I'm in over my head, I'll certainly ask you guys for advice.

:p All the cake and even the top can be addressed and brought back I'm sure. The bit the same, the big question would be was it Amphora'd out the Ass to get to this point ? THAT may be more of a problem than all the other stuff. "Course, some brother here may chance it, fix it all up and rave about his "find" here later :p Ya pay's your money, ya takes your chances :p
Addendem: If this model Pete is one you REALLY want, give it a shot but realize that after all the extra cost of re-furb there is the very real possibility you could have found another in the same cost range WITHOUT having to do all of the refurb

If it wasn't for the accursed p-lip, I'd give it shot. (if you were passing) Still looks like tobacco to me.

I'm no pipe restoration expert (but I play one on TV) but that one crack looks awfully deep, and it does appear to cut across the rim. The rim on the upper right looks OK, you can see wood through the build up. The lower left looks like it's charred/cracked wood, unless it's built up with tar awfully thick? Perhaps a left-hand smoker with very short arms using wooden matches and often on heavy drugs?

Let us know how it goes.

Natch

Looks like they may have used a triple torch cigar lighter on that one. Looks like that rim will need to be topped. If you go for it, good luck.

Well, I guess we'll never know. I was outbid. I'm really not much of a gambling man. With a $10.50 shipping fee, $25 was as big a chance as I was willing to take on such a "grim rimmed" pipe. By the way, Harlock, considering your current avatar pic, I would have expected a darker, wordier description from you than just "pretty grim". :p

Indeed, no "healthy flame" caused that rim to be charred...
Fainting and gasping, I looked at that unhallowed Erebus of titan toadstools, leprous fire and slimy water, and saw the cloaked throngs forming a semicircle around the blazing pillar. It was the Yule-rite, older than man and fated to survive him; the primal rite of the solstice and of spring's promise beyond the snows; the rite of fire and evergreen, light and music. And in the stygian grotto I saw them do the rite, and adore the sick pillar of flame, and throw into the water handfuls gouged out of the viscous vegetation which glittered green in the chlorotic glare. I saw this, and I saw something amorphously squatted far away from the light, piping noisomely on a flute; and as the thing piped I thought I heard noxious muffled flutterings in the foetid darkness where I could not see. But what frightened me most was that flaming column; spouting volcanically from depths profound and inconceivable, casting no shadows as healthy flame should, and coating the nitrous stone with a nasty, venomous verdigris. For in all that seething combustion no warmth lay, but only the clamminess of death and corruption.

I think Yak's trying to say something... message is foggy... 8)

...honestly, GK, I'm kind of glad you didn't get it, too...challenges are fine, and if it's a shape you really like, what the hell? But that one gave me that feeling something wasn't right.

I love a challenge and bid $29. It went for $30.50 or in that range. Probably for the best, with shipping at $11, that was too pricey to waste $40...... Anyone here take a chance?

After the fact and all, but in my (limited) experience, the pipes I've picked up from the bay have usually been in rougher shape than they looked, rather than better--I imagine it getting away is for the best!

And Harlock--"The Festival," yeah? Short but sweet, one of my favorites!
