Can you help me identify this pipe?

Hello, everyone.

I am incredibly new to this site, let alone smoking pipes in the first place. I have yet to try one, because the pipe I just ordered is coming in the mail.

The pipe in question doesn't seem to have a lot of info about it. I wouldn't know a brand if I saw one, but after today, being at Tobacco World with a very intelligent gentleman, I learned more about what's what.

However, I don't know what brand this particular pipe happens to be. So, if you could let me know, I would really appreciate, so I could put a name to a picture!

What I know, is that it is in great working condition, and it is very, very old. I have been told an antique. If it turns out to be rare and fragile, I don't want to risk ruining it, but I did buy it to smoke, so who knows!

Is that metalwork over the briar of is the whole thing carved? It's a wonderful old soldier that!

It's brown. Hope this helps.

Sorry, couldn't resist. The twisted silver or tin wire rather than stamped or molded metalwork means it was likely not a mass-produced piece. I'm guessing late 19th century, although the stem looks a bit more recent.

I wounder what the chain is for. My guess would be to connect it to a long stem similar to the German -
Austrian type of pipe.

Another possibility for the chain, could be so that the pipe could be affixed to a watch chain, if the pipe were intended to be carried during an active outdoor activity such as hunting.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, it was very common to affix such items as cigar cutters, and matchsafes, to fob chains intended to be carried in a vest, in order to keep them safely tucked away. I would imagine a man could easily lose a variety of items, when riding horseback.
