can you smoke through tongue bite or burn?

So my tongue is a bit beat up. It isn't because of the tobacco I do not think as I am mainly smoking FVF, G&H brown flake, and dark brown rope in the afternoons and early morning pipe in the morning. I think I probably am smoking too hot.

But can I just cut back a bit and be more careful? or should I stop for a week and let it heal up good?

Biotene mouthwash (found at the local drug store) and stopping would be the fastest way to heal up. Listen to what your body is telling you: pain means something is wrong. Give yourself 24 hours, pack some fvf, see how you feel after a puff... if it still hurts, leave it in the pipe and come back to it another day later (DGT ftw!) My experience comes from when wifey leaves me at my own devices for a day or two. I smoke WAY too much way too fast. It is worth the couple of days off though.

I just took 5 days off, and I'm a very moderate smoker by this board. My tongue was tingling and irritated, but not burning. I also had a canker (unrelated or related, unknown) on the webbing of my lower lip. I hadn't been smoking more or faster, so I think it was just a physical thing on my part, as I felt it with every blend type, and even when not smoking (which was why I figured it smart to chill).

I had a partial bowl of ABF last night I'm finishing up now, and I think I still feel it a wee bit, so I'm going to kill it and chill it again.

Rev, it may be steam bite. Try giving your flakes more drying time. My Gawith flakes are sometimes about a 16th of an inch thick, and really hang on to the moisture.

Also, try rinsing with warm salt water before bed as well as a couple times during the day. You will heal much more quickly. I second the Biotene suggestion as well.

Good advice here.

I second the Biotene, and drying the weed a bit more. I used to get bite something fierce which would carry on to the next day. Finally figured out I was smoking too fast and too wet.

Some time off would also be good.

I simply smoke less, smoke the lesser-in-strength, and less often.

There's been a few times when some scalding food or drink has damaged my tongue and I've said, "Well, that's gonna screw things up for a few days."

It just needs time to heal is all. Products can help, but can't really speed up the natural process. You'll just be raw for a bit.

Unfortuanately, tobacco just won't be as enjoyable in the meantime. *shrug*

When that has happened to me, I just STOP SMOKING for as long as it takes for my mouth to heal. Usually 2/5 days works. I don't try and smoke thru it as I want to enjoy my smoking

Like monbla, I experience a good bit of negation of pleasure if I continue to smoke when my mouth/tongue gets sore. Unfortunately the constant urge is to smoke fast while the only thing that will allow one to smoke without scorching his oral tissues is to smoke slow. I've slowed down a good bit but that doesn't mean that I don't cross the line into actual injury 1/5 smokes. When I do I don't smoke for 24-72 hours.

I'm sure I need to slow down more. The biggest flaw in slow smoking is that I have to find out how to taste with enjoyment with less smoke. I'm working on it. I seem to have found a way to do this of late. A former member of the board learned how to smoke very slowly, entered contests and won some. I think he could appreciate less smoke and less flavor. I wonder if it isn't that smoking fast yields X amount of flavor while smoking slow yields X-Y amount, and we can't recognize it at the lesser amount; that since we are used to more flavor, we can't taste it when the smoke volume decreases until our taste buds become acclimated to the lesser amount; that fully tasting flavor is possible at either level. We need to taste more with less smoke.

It wasn't until I got a Pete 305 that I found out that if I smoked slowly and played the sippity sip sip game and kept the pipe cool I could taste the tobacco.

There's also the fact that a lot of flavor is destroyed by heat. When I light my pipe I begin tasting the smoke after all the fussing with flame is done
and I can slow way down and sip, sip, sippity, sip damn sip.

I hate the sippity sip sip crap but I have no choice. People that smoke like a steam locomotive climbing a steep grade and can still taste
the smoke and don't end up with a burned tongue amaze the hell out of me.

My first two years smoking a pipe were bad because I'm just too damned stubborn to smoke the way I have to rather than the way I want to.... BUT ....I do know that the slower I can smoke and
still keep the pipe lit the better the smoke tastes. If I had given in and sipped instead of puffing all those years ago I'd have enjoyed my pipes and tobacco a lot more. No internet back then. No mentor either. Cram it in, fire it up. Anyone out there remember those days? Cram it in and fire it up and it's off the the races.

A bowl of PSLNF or Escudo is really a treat when allowed to just smoulder with the tiniest of puffs now and then. If I try to smoke like I want
to smoke I will taste the first two or three puffs of the bowl and might as well toss the rest cause I won't taste squat.

I hope you can find a way to get good puffs of smoke and taste at the same time without getting burned.

I just keep smoking until it eventually rains and then take "rain days".

I have found out over the years that high moisture content will cause me to get that ole nasty burner, I think that I had it enough in my younger days that I can cut it off before it gets too bad. I only get it now if I take a big ole pissed off smoke and catch myself tokin on the stem like a wild man. Then it is time to say" Softly lay the pipe down and back away, it will all be over when it cools off!" :joker:

The Biotene mouthwash is helpful, and I tend to take it a bit slower when the mouth is on fire and raw. Just can't get myself to give up the pipe for a couple of days.
