Age old question: When does an extra long Canadian actually become a Lumberman???? Is the distinguishing factor the shape and robustness of the shank????

I think a lumberman has an oval shank and a saddle bit, whereas a Canadian has an oval shank and a tapered bit.

Yep, Dean's got it right.

I always see long shanked pipes in two categories: Oval and round (also known as pencil shank)

The ovals are
Canadian - taper bit
Lumberman - saddle bit

Pencil shanked
Liverpool - taper
lovat - saddle

Think of a lumberman like the oval counterpart of the lovat. You can't go wrong with any of these pipes. I think I have more Canadians though I have alot of lovats. I have an awesome Jody Davis lumberman. And I have to see if I have any liverpools (which is so similar to a Canadian, I rarely make a distinction.

BTW, look at this: :king:

Mike has it classified as a poker. I would call it a liverpool. What do you guys think?

No, a Canadian has an oval shank. A lovat has a round shank (with a saddle bit).

A Canadian with a saddle bit would be a lumberman.

Again, not that it matters, just fun to discuss.

Great pipe TO.
I'd call it a pencil shank poker. :D :D
Bet it smokes like a dream.
Doc
And a very interesting thread. I always considered a long OVAL shank pipe a Canadian despite the bit shape, and a long ROUND shank pipe a Lumberman, a SHORT ROUND shank pipe a lovat and must have a saddle bit.
It's time to find a definitive description for this, I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

My Corona Old Boy lighter has a whole repertory of pipe shapes engraved on it, including a Liverpool...anybody know what that is??

I have the same lighter, and just noticed that the lumberman is actually a Canadian. It does NOT have a saddle bit in the engraving. So, they basically have 2 Canadians next to each other.

Canadian-oval shank, tapered stem
Lumberman-oval shank, saddlebit

Liverpool-round shank, tapered stem
Lovat-round shank, saddlebit

For those with Interest in these type of pipes:
It's the long shank that makes them smoke the way they do. One thing that I really have to watch for is saddlebit billiards because many call these lovats. Even though a good saddlebit billiard is a great smoker, it does NOT have the long shank that make Canadians great smokers.
