So, I have another question. My wife purchased a Carolina Briar for me a couple of years ago. It's an excellent smoker and I know it is made for Tinderbox. What's odd is that I cant find any info on the company. I'm just curious about the manufacture and quality of these pipes as I've notice fine cracks in my rusticated model. Since my wife bought it for me, it's of course my favorite but now I'm worried it's going to crap out on me since I've noticed these tine cracks or hairline fractures.

Thanks,

Martin

MartinH,

A carolina briar was my very very first pipe. It dutifully delivered flavors to my mouth for a few months, but after purchasing a stanwell a few months after that, I noticed the difference in craftmanship.

Not bad, but not good either. That stanwell changed the way I thought about pipes: something that the Carolina Briar could never do.

Thanks! I'm still looking for the perfect pipe but will have to be careful about investing in the really pricey ones unless it's a holiday. :) I looked at some stanwells online. They have some very nice looking pipes.

I find that when you buy wellmade pipes, you get better and better odds that they will be great smokers. My small collection is mostly handmades for this reason.

Thus, my pipe purchases are few and far between, but when they do occur... I always get a good'n.

Quality, not quantity, IMHO.

I agree with you actually. I'd rather buy a nice pipe per year than spend money in small chunks for bargain smokes. I'm still learning so much about this hobby that it's still a little overwhelming. But I've been looking at Stanwell, Ben Wade and Peterson pipes on ebay, just to get an idea of things. I appreciate your response.

Thanks,

Martin
