This is a picture from 2018 of a pipe I smoke at least once a day. An issue (with me and rimcake anyway) is that I smack ashes out of my pipe on he heel of my shoe and every now and then hunks come off in this process. It builds back up though...

Happy Birthday!

I think a lot of ā€œcharā€ is just soot
buildup. Pipes usually tilt downward and youā€™ll see the buildup more on the inner rim. A lot of it could clean up with a scrub and some sort of spirit or damp ashes.

I've always filled mine just under full/not to the rim but, about a 1/4" short of it.
Light carefully (I use a Bic) and I tend to try and keep the bowl level. Yeah, I know we don't always
have time to take that much time to be careful. But, I think just being a bit careful with something
you may have paid $275 - $600 for is well worth it. Cobs? who cares, light'em up!
I no longer use Bic due to the low quality butane in them - you get what you pay for! Try a flint sparked butane refillable pipe lighter that you can fill with triple filtered butane. The fuel you use makes a difference.
