Yes it's true, you can be a Kentuckian, smoke a pipe for a decade or so, and still have zero clue about cobs.

Do cobs color? Do you let a cake grow or not? Do they ever quit smelling corny?

Do you let a cake grow or not?

Brewdude's got it.  They taste woody (or even paper-like) at first, but that goes away, never to return.  They definitely develop a patina, and the cake is your call.  They are cheap, light, and usually taste kind of sweet no matter what you stuff in them.  Incredibly absorbent, you can get away with murder, as far as maintenance goes.  They are not particularly susceptible to burnout, in my experience.  They are not an inferior pipe by any means.  Just get a good one like a Country Gentleman or General.  The smaller ones don't seem worth the effort, unless you're just smoking a pipe for a cigarette substitute and a small bowl works for you.

I didn't pick any cob... I was gifted just shy of a seven day set.  Lol.

Be kinda rude not to smoke them.

PB, that one is a great dane egg shape. One of my favorites. It has been discontinued due to the cob shortage I suppose. I dunno for sure. I really like VaPer's and Virginias in a cob. That size would provide a long smoke with a good quality flake.

I smoke Lat's in my larger General size cobs too though.

Discontinued... Go figure.the first cob I ever actually liked and its discontinued. :fpalm:

Hopefully they will bring it back when they get in a good crop. That particular shape is really comfortable in the hand. I would love to have one modified with a bamboo stem. The stem is really the weak point of these pipes. With a good solid stem, these cobs are really durable and can last for years. Some folks think of them as being disposable, but they don't have to be.

My favourite, out of 7, is a Country Gentleman which has never been reamed. The bowl looks like something which has been coated with old motoroil, dirty as hell, it looks. But it is clean, in fact. Just the way it turned out after many smokes. It's been in rotation for 7 years already and I'm sure it good for another 7 years.

It smokes like a dream, I can feed it anything and it never complains, one of my best pipes. Won't trade it for anything.

Second to the CG is a Diplomat which looks a bit better. Couple of Legends, Great Dane, smaller unfinished (naked briar!) and ....a BULLDOG with 14ct coated band!

Wonderful companions, I love them all.

There's a guy on ebay who sells some nice looking, colorful lucite stems on the cheap that are said to be exactly the right size for those MM cobs. Might be the best thing you could do to make them great smokers.

That is freakin awesome, what a kick in the pants it's discontinued, I might even be forced to get past the nasty burning cob taste phase of breaking in a cob, that stuff just tastes vile to me but I'd sure try to get my head around it with a cob like that, that is so cool PB.

Beautiful pipe but......it can't sit  I have one like that (without the nice trimmings) and I don't smoke it to often.

Haha, PeeB got bombed. Maybe they'll make a little special badge for such a big target, PeeB-face in a medal or something.

Go smoke your cobs. :D

Well, this thread is only a couple of years old.......................

I have a couple of cobs. One is a Diplomat, the other one is lost somewhere. I like the cobs, and worried about burnout, as they are just a corn cob, and have heard from many sources that they are basically throw away pipes.

Well, the Diplomat is holding up quite well!

I like the shape of that discontinued egg shape too. I wonder, if you got a similar shaped cob, like the Diplomat, and just round off the bottom so it won't sit any more?

The Cobbit Shires have a same shape bowl as Great Dane Egg. I am wondering if they discontinued the GD Egg so they could produce more Cobbits, given the popularity of the LOTR pipe related stuff. Honestly, I think you probably could glue a conical wood plug to the bottom of a Diplomat and achieve a similar effect.

One of my best smoking pipes is a bent Diplomat. It's amazing how durable the damn thing is. I have smoked the tarnation out of it. I only wish that all my other cobs smoked as well as this one.
