sickening stuff here. I understand the convenience, but it reminds me of MP3s in a way. It makes sense for a quick minute, but then you realize you're paying for less; getting lesser quality for more money. Honestly, and not to just be contrarian, I don't get it. But then again, just the other day, I had someone tell me that 18 year old barreled balsamic vinegar tasted no different than white vinegar with coloring and sugar added. There's a strange pride taken in thumbing the nose at high quality because of the company it sometimes keeps and purposely enjoying a lesser stepchild version. We are an odd, stupid lot.

I'm not a coffee guy, but the older I get, the more all this plastic crap irritates me. So many of the "products" that are being produced these days are about 90% pollution. We buy and sell scads of senseless toys that aren't made to last. Mardi Gras...heck, they're just throwing pollution off the floats every time they throw those beads, frisbees, cups and so on.

And endless supply of plastic junk that will last a few minutes, and forever contaminate our world.

....and I'm not even a tree hugger...

I must be getting old.

I don't get the K-cups fad? I guess I can understand them from the selection side and the fact that everyone can have there own choice of bean but I can't justify them from a cost point of view. You can brew a whole pot of high grade coffee for less than the cost of one K cup.

Cheap plastic crap, in all it's forms, annoys me too.

I got this single brew on Amazon. I even gave them as Christmas gifts last year.

It comes with two stainless brewing cups that sit in a secondary one. They are quick and make a great single cup. You do use more coffee than with a standard pot. I use two scoops and that more than a regular pot requires but it makes a great cup of coffee in very sort order.

I dump the grounds in an old pot and when it fills put it (acidic) to fertilize my pine tree. Sucker grew like a weed.

You can get a brew cup for those that use the K-cups that you can fill with your own coffee. But, I like this unit a lot better.

Where I used to work, they went to one of the one-cup devices and kept the old drip for the flat-earth-society guys. We would get one K-cup a week from the dept, and folks would brings boxes for themselves. The old drip pot had ground coffee provided free. I drank the free drip coffee.

I would save the K-cups for a time when I was at the office and could not justify a full pot if no one else was drinking it. This was pretty rare. I ended up with three or four years worth of the things in my desk. I did not think the coffee was any better and, I did not want to be responsible for all the plasic in the landfills. On some level it is a matter of stewardship of natural resources, etc. I don't even use paper filters in my perk pot at home.

I think they use k-cups at the diocesan office. I may make a gift of the ones I have been collecting when I next have a meeting down there.

I reckon I'm stone age. I still use the old glass Fire-King coffee cup, although I stopped using a perk awhile back and got a drip machine.

It's interesting that churches will take a political stand on so many things, but they won't get near environmental issues with a 100ft pole. Another thing that doesn't make any sense to me for the very reason you cited. Isn't there a biblical passage that speaks of stewardship? Is it that God will sort it all out? Or selfishness? Or being oblivious? Or shortsightedness? I don't really expect anyone to explain this. I just don't understand how any religion can sit idle on the environment.

The local Catholic church has a $4M organ (yes, million), and it requires a technician from Germany to come once a year to tune and maintain it at a cost of $100K/visit. They had a couple of Green-thinking women who wanted to put recycling bins all over the place and in the associated grade school. It was an arduous, uphill battle until the very end. Every level of the church fought them on this. I wish I could give you a reason, but I don't remember any of them being worthy of memory. My point is that it is a very wealthy congregation with affluent members, so you'd expect some level of quasi-liberalism in the ranks. Nope. I'd like to take a tour of the administration offices to see what kind of coffee makers they use.

Stewardship is a complex issue, and there are plenty of preaching points. I will spare you the sermon.

Paper recycling used to be a feel-good thing for groups to do when the janitors where just dumping it all in the same bin by the parking lot and it was never being recycled. Who knows what the reasoning was behind the resistance?

The single cup k-cup brewers were momentarily interesting when I considered that an insert was available to use your own coffee. Then I thought of the price for possibly better coffee as compared to my old two cup dripper and said "No". I sometimes the plastic packaging costs more than the product! I also am disgusted by bottled water .. "Evian" spelled backward is "naive". I use a good water filter under the kitchen sink for drinking water. Around 30 bucks and good for six months..and I use those heavy plastic jugs from the ice tea my wife buys!! Dam good plastic jugs too!!
