COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – A terrifying mountain lion attack in Colorado Springs claimed the life of a man’s dog.

The incident happened last week in a gated community near the Broadmoor Hotel on the city’s southwest side.

The pet owner said he was out walking his dog when the big cat jumped out of the bushes, grabbed the dachshund, took off and ate it.


Neighbors say it’s not unusual to have cougar attacks in the area.

“We know there are mountain lions in the area, there have been other attacks several years ago,” a resident said. “Our backyard neighbor, a mountain lion climbed a tree and jumped onto her deck and took her dog.”


Parks and Wildlife agents set out a trap and caught the mountain lion and euthanized it.

Late last year two joggers spotted a mountain lion near a trail in Cheyenne Mountain State Park on the city’s northwest side. One was a female jogger, and she ran when she saw the animal.

Lindsey Grewe was slightly injured when the mountain lion chased her before returning to a deer carcass it was eating.

“I really thought he was going to attack me,” Grewe said. “I had visions that I was going to get eaten.”

Wildlife officials advise against people from running away from a lion if they encounter one in the wild. Instead, they encourage people to back away slowly and to make themselves appear as big as possible.

I used to live in Colorado Springs. By far the most incredible sity I have ever lived! The threat of the big cats was a real one. Especially out in the woods. Always remember to be out and about with some one slower than you!

I find that freehand pipes make excellent clubs for defending yourself with. Just be sure to take your best beatin' pipe with you on your next walk, am I right?

Yak they have always been here they werent reintroduced also I never go play in the woods here without my .357

Cougars have been reintroducing themselves in our area over the last few years. When my dad was young they were around. As I was growing up you would have an occasional sighting. Now it seems they are more common, although still not as common as out west.

The Black Bear and wild pig population is also on the rise.

I've got two coyote packs fighting for territory around my house just about every night. But wild pigs are an increasing problem in Arkansas. They root up hillsides and cause terrible erosion up in the Ozarks, and they'll eat just about everything they can catch/kill. Their is an "unofficial" season on them that runs for 365 days/year and the bag limit is, well, this is Arkansas, we don't believe in bag limits. :lol:

A good friend of mine in the NFS told me that when I'm packing up in the Ozarks, if I see a pig and have a firearm with me, shoot it, even if you're not prepared to dress it out and pack out the meat. Still, at the rate they can breed and their ability to adapt to just about any environment, my moneys on the pigs.
