Here is a link to an auction that stymies me. If it was unsmoked and being bought as a collection piece, I still can't fathom the price.

Bo Nordh

Maybe I should put that Beau Nourd pipe of mine up for auction now :)

Wonder what the listing fee for that delusion cost him?

Plus, there's a big difference between what you tell the Mrs it's worth and what it actually worth.

Listings don't cost much they make their money on the BIN sale and PayPal fee's.
I'm not even close to five figure pipe world but I've always kept pretty tight lipped about pipe prices and what the collection has cost but last year in Vegas my wife joined a group of collectors in the lounge after the show and a guy was passing around a group of super high end Danish pipe by Bo, Lars and Jess he was brokering. She was checking one out and said she liked it and a price was mentioned. I think for the first time she believed I'm a budget collector.
I's guess that pipe will go to a overseas dealer for under 20 and go to some guy that what ever he pays is pocket change.

I guess when this pipes is sold it will prove this old adage to be true. "A fool and his money are soon parted." JMHO

I made him an offer of $80.00 just now, waiting for his reply

I suppose to the right man it's worth that... I just don't imagine that man to be perusing ebay's estate market.. But really what do I know.

If I had stupid money I'd buy stuff like this just to gift it to some of the unsuspecting schmucks on here, with invoice of course just to get you in trouble with the Mrs.

Edited in: or better yet with original invoice and a fake "Thank you for the purchase" invoice for $17.. So you could forever buy whatever you wanted, you did save her $34,983 after all... What's $500 compared to that

Pete, provided it's not a fake... as Dave said it is a legitimate $15-20,000 USD pipe. Regardless the 'auction' is ended..

I love to stir a bit....

No bids......

One offer....

One upset seller...

Dave nailed it.  I guess it only helps to list with an astronomical starting bid.  Every pipe board picks it up.  Pretty smart (and free) "word of mouth" advertising.  Hmm, I might have to try that with my next piece.

I think this is pretty standard practice with pieces like this. It was relisted and now sold, most likely as Dave describes.

I'm actually surprised it didn't sell. I've seen some go upward of $15,000. It is usually a Chinese buyer. I swear, they are driving the market for many notable pipe makers these days.

I know it drives some insane but I'm not bothered by it. I've heard things like "they've went to China never to be seen again"... I don't know how that's any different than "they've went to Ohio/Berlin/Saudi Arabia never to be seen again"..   If the hobby gets picked up by a million rich Chinamen then that's a million more BoB to me.  They'll keep the blenders blending, the carvers carving, the etailers selling.
I'd much rather see pricing go up by positive demand as to see it go up by government regulation.

Then again if China is buying it we are probably all on the no fly list and suspected of terrorism etc.

It is quite nice. Outstanding birdseye on both sides. My biggest concern would be how deep his use of pipe cleaners dug into the bowl opposite the stem side.

Sounds right to me ("worth" and "relative value" being very different things), and it's not really an awful ebay strategy.

Strip away the extra zeros. Something is market-valued at $15-20. Put it up for bid at $25 with an instant buy option of $40. No one buys it, so you do it again just to keep people looking. Is anyone buying the thing for $40? Probably not. Is anyone bidding $25? Not out of the question, but probably not. Are a bunch of people watching the auction to see what happens, trying to justify coming in at a lower price to get a "deal?" You bet. And now $20 feels like a bargain based on the original bid, so the seller ends up making closer to the top of the market range than the bottom.

All you would have got from me is a auto reject I'd have it set where I wouldn't have even seen your offer. Seriously, I don't have time to personally reply offer I would get.

LOL! The "fool" who has the bank to ultimately buy this pipe probably makes in a day or two what many make in a year. IMO no pipe is a good investment but I will say (as a collector not a dealer) the only pipes I have made money on (probably sold to Chinese and US resellers) are very high grade Danish pipes.
