Had a jar with about 4 ounces or so of Uhle's Perfection plug burley laying around. I like the stuff a lot but it can be tough to keep lit at times. Had a 3 ounce bag of Uhle's Crushed White Burley sitting around (It's the same as their blend 255 but with  a lighter casing, kind of a soapy licorice thang goin on there) and I prefer the 255 when I want that aromatic-like presence, so the CWB wasn't getting smoked much. Mixed these two together (they're the same component tobaccos in different proprtions and with different casings) and added about 4 ounces of Uhle's 00 burley to it so there would be a significant portion of leafy burley to go with all that cubed burley. Pressed it into a large airtight tobacco jar and let it sit a while. An amazing, outstanding smoke. Creamy nutty smooth burley, very smooth.

I read a comment on TR where an old feller commented that he did something similar to this with his Uhle's blends and I thought what I was doing was close. He was right, way mo betta! I love it when stuff turns out well.  8)

Rather partial to Burley myself as it happens....

Seems like you had a Eureka moment of sorts, that's awesome, enjoy it in rude good health PD.   :sunny:

Uhle's burley has a very rustic, almost floral, yet pure tobacco nature to it and it's quality is better than most. Blend 00 (which I believe is actually Stokkebye ps702) is a fairly strong no nonsense fine ribbon with an amazingly aromatic presence, in an untopped pure tobacco way (meaning it's aromatic like a good cigar can be aromatic). Perfection plug is a chunky plug cut mixed with ribbon cavendish and cased with something that makes it smell like baked goods fresh from the oven. Crushed White Burley is the same basic tobacco components as Perfection plug, but with a casing that gives off a subdued floral and light licorice presence. Mixing these three in near equal proportions has created a sublime smoke. Not too strong, fairly floral, slightly sweet, and with an amazing aroma. Most attempts at home blending fall short of being good, sometimes they're OK, this one is a home run.

Well PD you have my attention since I cut my pipe teeth on Uhle's blends being an ex-cheesehead, and my late Pap smoked 255 exclusively. Been to the shop several time as well.

Haven't tried the perfection plug yet and don't have the CWB. Looks like I have a new direction to explore. Got me some 00 though. Hmmmm......

Cheers,

Just had a quick butchers at Uhle's site PD, corr, some of that stuff comes across as being most enjoyable, very pleased you are enjoying your home mixing so well, it is marvellous when they go right isn't it.

Bit off topic I know but one of my most favoured home mixes is St.Bruno/Condor/Dark Fired, it's nice having the extra warmth from the untouched Dark Fired in the mix, absolutely fantastic home mix is that one.

Being a lover of good Burley blends I have all 3 of those Uhle's mixtures and your blending recipe sounds fantastic. I'm gonna give 'er a go. Thanks for the info.

Oh...SWEET!  A new Burley blend! Summer's here!!!   :sunny:

Edit:  Thursday, the 8th.

I ordered the above described trio of blends on the 3rd when I first read this burley blending thread. Still waiting on delivery. They must use the "rental postal burro" a few other vendors do that I've seemed to get hooked up with. Nice.

Note:  I discovered early on in my PAD/TAD career that when a shipment seemed late all I had to do was send a "stinging memo" to the vendor's customer service department, demanding to know this or that about my shipment...and as I'd by magic it would show up the next day.  Later I found that just posting about it 'being late' somewhere also had a fairly profound effect.  As you may consider this my official 'perceived late delivery sniveling post'  I assume I will be able to regale you with my initial impressions of this blend tomorrow evening...unless by describing the above cosmic connectedness opposing Murphy-esque forces are brought into play. In that event, all bets are off!

Had a few glitches with my order from Uhle's...but their customer service ironed everything out very nicely. So I'm finally in possession of the three required blends. This morning I'm tossing all of them into a huge bowl for a good stir, then into a nice jar they go. Of course I'll keep out a bit with which to do early testing!

So...PD, how long do you think they need to meld? I mean, we're not aging VA's here. What...a month?...three months?

If you haven't already done the deed, I'd suggest taking some of each to blend together and hold back some of each to smoke on their own, so as to draw your own conclusions about it all.

I started smoking it right off. Haven't noticed much of a change since.

OK - this IS a damn good blend! My poor old nose buds must be fairly fried cause I can hardly taste the difference between the Crushed White and Perfection Plug blending...but I think the PP smokes darker, which I like as much as the trio. I think I'll try to get some more of that in hand for the Summer.

I tried to place an order this morning, but their system disallowed the whole thing after a half hour of typing, etc. Weird. Said to 'try later'. Given their neglecting my first order for ten days before 'finding' it after two emails and then sending a mismarked bag of one blend...I'm slightly less than impressed with their order system. Of course they made everything right in the end, and certainly their products are singular in quality.

Guess I'll go back and try again...it's starting to rain here. I'd like to try that other one...what was it? The 255? The one akin to the Crushed White but with a stronger licorice scent. There are a few other anise scented blends out there (Ramsgate and Blackpool) and I rather like it. The Crushed White from Uhle is claimed to be as well, but I can't tell - it's that light. So maybe the other one will be enough to tell it's there. lol

Uhle's burleys are some of the best around IMO, next to L J Peretti's that is.
Uhle's 255 and 300 blends are my faves, and when I look for a bit of licorice 255 does it for me.
Mix 'em, match 'em and you can't go wrong.

Dave

255 is what my late Pap smoked exclusively and is what I started out with on my pipe journey. I figured if it was good enough for Pap it was good enough for me.

It does indeed have a licorice top dressing, but it's not strident and is sparingly applied. Just enough to let you know it's there. Be aware that it is cubed pretty chunky and can be kind of a a bugger to get lit. One that's done it burns pretty good.

I have some old stuff that's gone round the bend, otherwise I'd gladly send you some. You should taste it fresh. It's worth it.

Cheers,

RR

Interesting. I went back and had a half pound (Uhle's version is 7 oz.) of Perfection Plug and a small bag (1.5 oz.) of the 255 blend and it was disallowed again. Turns out it was PayPal saying "No." as I was trying to just use a card instead of running it via their system. But in desperation I did go via my PayPal thing and it worked fine. Hmmm.  Whatever. Order is in, hopefully it will go out Tuesday...of this next week!

I've heard glowing comments about their Burleys for years...good to know it's true!

RR - I don't have any problems with cube cut as a rule...I just gravity feed the bowl and give it a super light tamp before lighting and it seems to do OK. At least the two cube cut blends I got in from them last week worked fine. And they do have a nice slow burn, which I truly appreciate.

That, and loading up my tall MM Natural with the stuff gives a whole morning of easy puffing goodness.

255 and cwb are the same tobacco. Double the topping you taste in cwb and you have 255. IMHO, pp is more of a pastry-like confection topping and 255/cwb is a light anise. Both give off a talc taste as well.
