Hooray, I finally cracked and dove off the deep end.

No, but really.

Pipes "at rest" after a day of smoking, usually overnight, end up having a salted pretzel-like scent in the bowl, and even shank if the stem is removed. Especially the Petersons. It isn't dank or bad-smelling, well, unless you hate pretzels. It's honestly how I can tell if the pipe is fully dry or not. No pretzels, good to go.

It's a good tip for the whole family.

Now I have to get off the couch and check.

Thanks Kyle!!

It's that salt and alcohol thing you do to them, probably.

What's a pretzel? Which of the 2 main food groups is it closest to - potatoes or Guinness?

Nope! In fact, Dinky and Thurston have both never been treated. And a Ben Wade I received recently that I did salt treat this way doesn't smell like pretzels when drying. It's usually the Pete duo, my Harris morta poker, and my trusty/ugly Noymer leather-wrapped bulldog. Those which get pretzel-y all dry a little slower than the rest, but once they do, no trace of scent in the bowl, smoke or stem.

I think it's faint briar resin of some kind mixing with other stuff on three, and leftover Latakia stinkiness on the morta.

Maybe you have been hanging out with this guy. I bet his pipe smelled like pretzels also.

I'm not... Latakia has a salty undertone in some blends. and the dry Virginias can be very bread like in their presentation. Thats what he's smelling and his brain is associating it with pretzels.

Sorta makes sense to me

But hey, if losing the pretzel scent is the way for you to ensure a rested pipe is ready to smoke works for you, nothing wrong with that!
