My daughter’s boyfriend found this neat little Dr. Plumb bulldog at a New Orleans shop and sent it to me for restoration. I thought Dr. Plumb had a connection to GBD and I believe they are now owned by the Cadogan group. The stem was in terrific shape, save for a heavy coat of oxidation. The top of the bowl was scorched and it had some dents and scratches.

Before:

I reamed the bowl with both my Castleford and Senor reamers. Someone it the pipes past had reamed it a little out of round, but it wasn’t too bad. I removed some of the dents with a knife heated by a flame and a wet towel. Most of the major ones popped back out nicely. The bowl has some fills, but they are hidden well by the factory finish. In order to remove the scorched top, it would have required a restain. I was afraid with the numerous fills, it would look better with the factory finish. “Character” as they say. I buffed the bowl with some Tripoli, White diamond and with a final buff using Carnuba. The stamping is very legible.

The stem was soaked in an Oxyclean solution overnight to soften the brown coating. Unfortunately, the stem logo proved very problematic. I could not get the oxidation off this part of the stem without removing the logo. The owner opted for me to leave the logo and brown patch.

Here is the finished product.

The pipe sure looks like it would be a good smoking piece and I hope the young man enjoys it for many years.

The Dr. Plumb line was a seperate line made by GBD back in the 60s thru early 70's as I recall. They did have fills but sold for less. That one came out very nice and will probably prove to be a "go to" pipe as it has some old briar in it. Nice job :p

Well done, sir!!

I only hope "the young man" will appreciate your effort and recognize the value of the pipe. Wish I can lay my hands on some old Dr Plumbs

So far, it looks like my daughter chose well, this is a very nice young man. They spent a week here earlier in July. He was all over my pipe collection and tobacco. We went up to Boswells one day, in the MGB, made a man day out of it.

He really like my GBD 9438 pipes. I found an exact duplicate of my Tapestry pipe on Ebay last week and won the auction. I'll clean it up and give it to him for Christmas, if he plays his cards right....

Here's a sneak peak of the 9438.

Wow, that is a big pix...

Here's the young man. He has an Italian pipe, so this is his first English made.

She's a cutie and super-selective, so some how this cat made the cut, so far...

That's a way great restoration job riff. Nice looking pipe.

Also good to see your future SIL has a taste for the pipe.
Not sure we're there yet....she's too young to get married....

Nice looking pipes; I have a couple of Dr. Plumbs that I keep in with my hunting stuff, a saddle bit Dublin and a big saddle bit billiard. Mine have pretty decent wood but lots of BIG fills.

May I say you also have a lovely daughter.

Nice looking "B" too; what year? A few years back I switched to SUV's from my daily driver of 15 years or so, a 1972 MGB/GT. I miss her sometimes, but I don't miss the time spent under her bonnet!

Thanks Idlefellow. My B is a '79. The wife and I rebuilt the motor this past winter, so far this summer, we've accumulated 2,000 trouble-free miles.

That Plumb did have a lot of fills, which was the reason I didn't want to restain it. The young man reports it smokes very well and he seems pleased with it.

I just got a DocP in a dog - it has a large stinger type thingie that protrudes into the chamber. It pulls out easily enough. Does anyone have insight on the thingie? I'll pull it out and put it away and do the puffing w/o the device.

Yep, yank that thing (sorry I forgot to add that on my reply).

Very nice job on that Dr. Plumb and happy to see you left the stain as-is.

I've had some luck using Obsidian Oil (comes in small bottles for $8 but I use very little so this bottle will last me years). If that were my pipe, I'd try a little Obsidian around that logo ... I don't think it will hurt and may improve the looks.

The boy is in New Orleans. (no Obsidian) I told to rub in a little olive oil and he said it helped.

Another amazing piece of work Al, nice going. Your daughter is lovely, obviously takes after her mother.

Thanks, you DON'T want to bump into a young lady that looks like me.....
