As I mentioned in an earlier thread, a buddy of mine from my pipe club came down for a visit on Saturday and brought with him some early 1970's burley flake he had been gifted while at a shop in Boston. Smoking this stuff for me has been a religious experience. Obviously it's very brittle and dry. As you fold the squares intothe bowl they totally crumble on themselves.

Saturday nite I left some semi moist strips of Navy Flake out on my coffee table and brought them into work today. It's pretty darn dry. Loading it into a bowl produced the same crumbling. The taste of the drier flake is just wonderful!

 I think I've been missing the boat on this whole thing! Dry flakes taste so much better!

Anyone else have an opinion about humidity and flakes?

It seems that for me when my baccy is too dry it burns too hot and fast, where the moisture content seems to slow down the burn rate, it's a bit "cooler". I've left out FVF like that and when I smoked it, it didnt seem to be as flavorful.

Son, As the song says"it aint nescessarily so" consider our Cadilliac G&H blender, they come somewhat wet, not like SG's! , and I think they shouldbe smoked that way, or so saying, why do we try to preserve freshness by jarring? Dad
Pacem my Son!

I always leave flakes out to dry overnight as i find they smoker smoother, and are easier to keep lit. i am smoking some FVF as I type this. It is tasting fine this way and I have done this for years.

I've had mixed results with this, I recently prepped some plug cut by leaving it to dry for a while as a large flake, then rubbing it and leaving it to dry and then rubbing it further, whole process was probably about a day's worth of drying, but either because my hands had been in contact with it too much or some other reason, it didn't seem to harbour the same flavour as before. With FVF I found leaving it over night or a little longer worked really well, but any longer than two days really does just rob it of its flavour
