There is a Dunhill that I have my eye on but it is a 9mm filter pipe from europe. Has anyone used a dunhill filter pipe without the filter? If I use a filter will it change the flavor?

Just smoke 'em without the filter. Unless you like sucking through a filter. Each to his own. I have an Il Ceppo and a Savinelli that do just fine with the empty cavity. Consider it a mini-calabash effect and forget about it.

THIS for sure ! I have Sav's that use the balsa filter and a Dunhill that came with a stinger that I pulled out. I smoke 'em ALL without the "extras" and they smoke just FINE ! Go Bid and I hope ya get a DEAL

I just bought a coveted '71 CK Shell that was a 6 mm filter pipe, which wasn't disclosed by the seller (he just was unaware). I don't like smoking without the filter, it's just too darn big and a loose draft. I bought a Savinelli 6 mm filter adaptor at Cup O-Joes and filed it down to fit the tapered chamber. That worked well and not it smokes like a normal pipe. I got such a good deal on that one, I considered sending it off to Norwoods for a vulcanite insert. But, the Sav filter solution worked so well, that wasn't necessary.

Meh. I've tried that and can't tell the difference except with the insert it smokes "dirtier." I'll stick with the unimpeded flow. Works for me. I'd prefer just a straight, filter-less design, but in the end it doesn't make any difference that I can tell. I'd buy another, no problem. And with current Savinelli, for one, you don't have much choice.

Nope. Can't be done. The pipe won't light without the insert.
That explains a lot! I wondered why I had so much tobacco lying around. I haven't been using any! And all this time I thought I was getting a nice, mild smoke!

Riff:  I love that cut-down approach.  I've wanted to do that with a Savinelli to see if it'd work, glad to see I wasn't the only one with that idea--gonna copy it soon. Only difference is I plan on chamfering the intake. It's just something I do.

RB:  Yeah, they smoke "dirty" with a filter adapter, for sure.

E:  I knew something was wrong.

Same here, I do it to all my pipes. It prevents gurgling to a great extend.

I smoke a number of filter pipes, 6mm & 9mm, without filters or adaptors, no problems.
Been doing this for many years.

Kyle, I've seen you mention this before, are you talking about doing something like this to the end of the tenon? I'm a bit workshop challenged.

I had no idea there were 9mm to 6mm filter adapters! Someone had their thinkin' caps on. :D

I've gone back and chamfered that adaptor since that photo was taken. Fitting the adaptor was a lot more work than I had envisioned. I measured 6 mm at the Dunhill opening, but that Sav adaptor was significantly larger.

I decided to pass on the Dunhill. I just received my invoice for the nNorthern Briars pipe I ordered.

I don't use the filters anymore. Worst case scenario, it may need an adapter. Never came up for me though.

I have a few filter pipes and I've never put a filter in them. They smoke just fine.

An old friend of mine who lived to be 93, used to smoke GPC cigarettes but he would rip the filter off before smoking them. When I asked him why he said "Its like sucking on a tit through a bra". Hahahahahaha
