Early Drip Wax

Not totally positive on what maker did the first Drip Wax pipe but I know Radice was among the first and this is an early example of that application.
Keeping it smokey with some Germains Uncle Tom.

The cool thing about the history of the dripping wax is that it started, as I understand it, as an interpretation of deer scraping the fur off their antlers, ie new dear carvings. If I'm mistaken, I'd love a more accurate account.

Butera told me years ago that it was intended to be "New Idea" but the stamp maker mis read the order. The story was confirmed by Roberto Ascorti on the PipesMagazine.com Radio Show a few months ago.

I wouldn't be surprised if the wax drip concept came from France long ago but Castello is what I know something about. :shock:

That's interesting about the stamp. I would have guessed it was a language translation snafu, yet it was obvious enough that it was the animal deer. Have to admit I like the idea of New Dear more than New Idea. My main hobby is music, and there are all kinds of weird interpretations when going to English from another language. The Japanese and Finnish make all kinds of interesting mistakes.

That's cool information Zeno and daveinlax, I shouldn't be surprised that Ascorti would have been in the mix with Radice but I didn't figure on it being while they were at Castello I was thinking more along when they were at Caminetto but I don't have any made by Caminetto nor do I know if they exist. I do have one made by Enzo Galluzo who worked with Ascorti after Caminetto closed and when Pepino Ascorti passed away Enzo started his company, Capitello.
