I have working my way through a tin on the Deluxe Navy Rolls over the holidays. I like it more and more as I go on. They are very similar, almost identical in fact. Escudo might be slightly fuller, but not by much. I like the sweetness the Dunhill and the Perique seems more subdued.

I know there have been plenty of posts on this but it´s the first time I´ve tried the Dunhill and wanted to make mention of it. :cat:

What do y´all think?

Very interesting article. Some years back (perhaps '97 or '98) I tried both blends side by side. I found Escudo to be sweeter and more to my liking. They were also visually distinct. I then decided to stock up on Escudo (my favorite VaPer blend) and never smoked the Rolls again. I still have a good stock of '98 and '99 Escudo (there was a scare just about then that it was going out of production). Perhaps it is time to try again...

By the way, the Navy Rolls were then unavailable in the US, but I used to get tons of it during my trips to Europe. Made a lot of money out of it, which helped me subsidize the stash of Escudo. :D

Once some of my taste came back it's hard to tell the difference! I like both and so far not enough smoked to say which I like best and of course more of my taste need to return.

I've tried 2 bowls of the most recent Escudo, and I've had a few more of Dunhill's Deluxe Navy Rolls. To me, the Escudo was more heavily topped, to the point I couldn't smoke it anymore. The Dunhill DNR were much more natural tasting.

So I just did these tins back to back.   On opening I found the same vinegar/ketchup smell that is so familier with any McCelland smoker.   Escudo smelled a bit stronger.

Cut and pack was pretty much identical and moisture content seemed to be the same.  Smoking the two I would say Escudo had a bit more pronounced flavor.   Both burned well.

All in all . . . I'd say it was a toss up.   Honestly in a blind tasting I doubt I would be able to tell the difference between the two.

I tried 'em both about 20 years ago and at that time neither suited me but they were DIFFERENT. About a year ago, I picked up a tin of both and have to say, foe me, they are THE SAME tobacco, both in appearance and aroma and taste! It would not surprise me as they are both blended by the same corporate blender I believe? JMHO

I smoke both blends in my regular rotation and find the Dunhill to be sweeter and less peppery.  Both are excellent blends and both age very well.

WOW! When did Lane buy STG/Orlik? STG still lists Orlik as one of it's corporate entities. So Orlik is now an American tobacco co!

"There have been some rumors/slight panic of late regarding lack of availability for products in the Peter Stokkebye portfolio. I just wanted to put the rumors to rest and let everyone know about some recent changes. As of April 1, Lane Limited will take over most of the pipe tobacco portfolio from Villiger-Stokkebye International, including:
  • Peter Stokkebye Bulk

  • Escudo

  • Erinmore

  • Stanwell

  • Orlik

  • W.O. Larson

  • Balkan Sasieni

  • Skandinavik

  • Sail

  • Troost

(Here's an article on pipesmagazine with more details.)

So, what does this mean for pipe smokers? Most importantly:
  • The products themselves are NOT changing. They will be produced at the same factory, using the same leaf and the same recipes as they always have.

  • The prices are NOT changing. We are committed to NOT raising the list price for these products.

  • The portfolio is NOT changing. Not one sku has been eliminated.

  • Product availability WILL change. This is because it's part of my job to make sure we are never out-of-stock on these items again.

Anyway, just figured some folks would like to know."..

Dover,
I'm not doubting what you quote but here's what STG lists as their tobacco's they are blending. Has Lane bought out STG? Your reference does not mention STG and it's ownership of Orlik, merely references to Villager Stokybe. A bit confusing, sort of like "...who's on first" sort of thing

STG has Taken over Lane.
Lane is the US arm of STG. They are now "Scandinavian Tobacco Group Lane Ltd".
Here is the entire list of STG brands that were acquired through several big purchases of late: http://www.st-group.com/index.php/pipe-tobacco/complete-brand-list

Not shouting "Marky Mark"
The font was not what I wanted. I must have been a little bleary eyed when I hit send after I typed...........:suspect:
