Learning a little, I'd like to find some block meerschaum pipes one day, and with the jungle that is the Internet, I know not all sellers/makers/manufacturers are the same.

Who has the best pieces/prices out there, in your opinion? Can be anything from estates, vintage, to new, cheap or pricey.

Meerschaum has always intimidated the hell out of me, and at least if I start out with something I can depend on, I'll be alright...

Thanks in advance...

If you start with a crappy one,
you may get turned off meerschaum.
Get a Baki, IMP or Altinok.
Agreed, which is why I was skeptical buying one. I don't know what I'm doing with meerschaum.

All three of those suggestions showed me great pipes at great prices... they're awesome!!!

Here are mine. If I had to suggest, start with a Baki.
You can't go wrong.

Baki's website is hilarious...totally a 1997-style site, all over the board, bad HTML, but functional and easy enough to get around. Apparently he only sells them through that site--good to know. I'll keep an eye on it, as his work literally took my breath away in many instances. It'll probably be where my first meer is bought.

It wasn't until I got Baki's name and started searching I came across this...

Whoops. Oh well. Found it eventually, I guess.

Here are a few videos from youtube to get you started, my dad had a few nice meerschaum pipes when I was a boy.

Ask yourself if you want to buy Signed pipes or unsigned most made buy the same carving teams at less money. (block meerschaum, Eskisehir / Turkey).

If your are looking to smoke them often try meerschaummarket (also on ebay)

If your going to collect start with Yanik (on ebay), Emin, Mesut and the list goes on.

Used meerschaum requires lots of good pictures to show what is not in description (cracks, chips, stems) and can make them more costly based on the way the pipe is coloring.

You got a lot of reading (good/fun reading) if you want to learn meerschaum.

Hope this helps a little and good luck, John.

Hers mine. Shes a good smoke and came from ebay I foget what I payed but it wasnt much. You can see the name altinok and is a sitter wich comes in handy. I enjoy her

Beautiful yet quaint, plumbernater. Some meers are over-the-top in design, but few show beauty. In those cases, it's like the carver, whoever they may be, is going for all the same thing. I want something unique, without the ubiquitous shapes you see everywhere. Your pipe? Total class: but there's some obvious marks it isn't "cookie cutter" either. I like it.

I have a Emin, Im not sure how good they are but I like it...and she smokes nice.

Thanks for the in-site John, I picked this pipe up on eBay about 6 years ago and didnt remember much about it.

I'm totally sold on IMP meers and I like to buy them from smokingpipes.com.

Smokey

I have two SMS lattice billiards that I bought from James Island Piper online. Great prices on new and used if you're patient.

Gonna unbury my thread for a moment...

...yeah, I like Baki pipes and the other suggestions, but price and availability in what I like have been hit-and-miss...

Any opinions on Altinok?

There's some nice prices and options (like the double-stem!) I'm kind of into...

If you look back in this thread you will notice mine is a Altinok from turky, They are block meershaum and I enjoy mine, she smokes real nice. I got her used from ebay for a nice price. I want to think 30 some bucks. Some of the coloring was already there so ive just added. Mine smokes preety cool. Of course you can get any of them hot im sure you know.
