I said ASH, you miscreants!

So I loaded up one of my best smokers, that I usually smoke EMP (a favorite of mine), and got a fine white ash and an hour smoke. No hot pipe bowl. No dottle. Woooo hooo! Hallelujah!

There was one problem--it wasn't the best smoke I ever had. Mediocre at best. It was a tad hot and moist, and had a little biting edge on it. I didn't deviate from my normal smoking style that I could tell. I tamped little. I drew slow. The tobacco was the perfect dryness (or moisture, if you will).

One thing I noted: what I loaded was the tail end of the tin, so there was a lot tiny bits and pieces in there, obviously obstructing a bit more air flow than normal due to settling.

Fine white ash--more evidence it's a pointless indicating factor.

You're no fun  What are all the "newbies" got left to aspire to now? No more 1 match lights  No more one tamp till done bowls
No more no gurgle smokes  What's left, just load, light and smoke ?

I have always suspected that "a fine, white ash" was an urban legend.

:face:

Likewise, i've had several smokes which were Fantastic in every way, but did not produce that 'Fine White Ash'.

OTOH, i've had the 'Fine White Ash' with less than perfect smokes - requiring much tamping and many re-lights...

I agree with Yak, it seems to be more of an Urban Legend...

Yup, just light the Effin tobacco and smoke the d@mn thing!

It's practically irony-humor; a pipe meme. I laugh when I read it, but I scoffed when I actually saw it.

"Tobacco aficionado" reviews often seem to conclude with: "....and the final wisp of smoke was gone yielding only a fine white ash". It's the stuff of flowery and wishful tobacco reviews. :p

This rarely happens. For me, at least.

I do enjoy the hell out of the majority of my smokes though.

Ahh...
The mythical land of Finewhiteash...
I seem to remember summering there once, several incarnations ago...
Delightful, really... everyone should, of course!

What starts out "Once upon a time" and ends with "Fine white ash"?

Rob, I made some cob mud out of the fine white ash of one of my cigars, mixed with some saliva. Surprisingly, it dries to the consistency of concrete, and certainly has extended the life of both cobs I have in regular rotation.

One of the best tips I've picked up off BoB! :study:

Rob: It worked fine. I don't think I'll be needing a makeshift wood plug in the bottom for some time. I've even mudded the bottoms of a few pipes that had bowls that extended too far past the draft hole. So far, so good. One thing I've done that I think made a difference is slightly moistening the surface to be mudding--seems to set a little better in there. I've even dropped my cob since the mudding and nothing broke inside. 8)

At least if I do get a fine white ash from a pipe I know what to do with it.
