Where has this stuff been all my life? Man talk about great taste and nicotene buzz. This sheat rocks!

No question from me. 5Bros is as good a smoke as there is, anywhere. ANd, the truly sad comment is that 5Bros is the last extant representative of the string cut tobaccos which are sold as OTCs. While both Kendall KY and the dark shag are available, these are not available in the corner grocery. I am only thankful that Pinkerton had the foresight to retain their rights to produce this smoke. Lighter and a bit less potent tobaccos (Cutty Pipe and Honest) of the same genre as 5Bros were discontinued by American Tobacco before they (AT) sold their holdings. A sad day indeed. 5Bros in a clay is damn near perfection in smoking, IMHO.

This stuff is good, but it burns so FAST. I don't know, I think I prefer a good cube cut.

5 Brother's has been my daily smoke for over 20 years & I still love it , not much else I can add.

I hate to be a wet blanket here. I smoked 5 brothers about 15-20 years ago. I do remember the nicotine buzz! The other thing I remember is the pain in the back of my throat after I had smoked it a while. I was not inhaling it either. I decided real quick that I did not care to inflict this tobak on myself as a regular occurance.

I just picked up an order of 5-Bros. from an online vendor. I had to get a dozen pouches to do the order. I offered individual pouches for sale or trasde on another site and was almost 'booed' out of the stadium. Weird. After my first sample I was hooked! I find it especially fun to add a bit to other 'weak sister' blends for a little kick. It has worked it's magic on 'Royal Yacht' with excellent results...among others...though that mix was done more for flavor than for an N kick. I too love the fact that Pinkerton's still has control, etc. I've been really enjoying and preferring true 'American' tobaccos...the burleys, the Kentuckys, the Marylands, the Carolina belt VA's...and of course the Periques, both St. J and Acadian. 5-Bros is a true American classic. Love it!

Like zunismoke, I find it rather hard on the throat. But I do mix it in to "tamer" blends to give them some kick. Mixed two parts to one part any decent aromatic[ you can smoke in a crowd, get complements on your tobacco's fragrance, and still get some of the nic and burley taste at your end of the pipe you want.

Natch

Um, BH I'll admit to being the only one on "that site" to finally being open to giving this a whirl (despite my prior misgivings and such) including and especially after your inspired suggestion to blend it into other more mild and otherwise ho-hum blends.

Truth be told I've never tried the blending thing myself, but frankly there are a few "squatters" here at chez Brewdude that don't inspire me much. And the possibility of jazzing them up with a pinch or three of 5 Bros does hold appeal.

And I'll certainly try a bowl or so of it on it's own merits as well. But if the nic hit is significant I'll avoid that going forward since I don't get on well with high nic 'baccys at all!

:affraid:

Cheers,

RR

I think it's in the same league as Gawith's Dark Flake, Birdseye, and the twists...as well as Peterson's Irish Flake. One bowl of any of them doesn't usually hit me all that hard. It's when I fire up that second bowl that I get the rush. I wish I could cure myself of that evil desire to hit that second one...but I just can't seem to. lol Same thing happened when I was younger and dating. Always liked the fillies. Still do.

I think the old saying, "Moderation in all things" is highly over rated. When I'm dead and in the ground...then I'll think about moderation. For now...I'll have that second bowl, shivvers be damned...and I'll leer at the pretty girls, thank goodness I have a wife that laughs when I do...and I'll howl at the moon baby!

God bless Gawith, Peterson and the Pinkertons!!!

Im glade you gave it a try. Like I said I like to top off a bowl of RY with 5 brothers. I dont really smoke it straight just as a bowl topper.

Pardon my vast ignorance...is 5 brothers an OTC? Is it still sold at some Rite Aids or Walgreens or whathaveyou? I have never seen it.

Well,I just had my first and last bowl of 5 Brothers. Rarely would I offer a conclusive opinon on a tobacco after a single bowl, but on this one I have no reservations in doing so. My review consists of only two points.

1. Taste. In the words of our esteemed brother Kyle, "Meh".

2. If you want a tobacco in this vein that actually tastes good, smoke GH & co Kendal Kentucky.

That is all.

Frankly, it tasted like the cheap cigarette tobacco I used to roll in high school. Not bad, but not great either. I remember I used to mix that kind of stuff with a little aromatic pipe tobacco (Cap'n Black kind of stuff) and roll some really decent, long burning cigs with it. I was a broke kid and didn't really like inhaling anyhow, so it was perfect.

I smoked my first bowl last night too. I won't write it off yet, but I certainly did not fall in love. I also got a cigarette feeling from it, but I was going to say it tasted like a good cigarette rather than a cheapie. It wasn't bad, but I found it to be rather harsh with very little redeeming qualities. Maybe I had just built it up in my head too much, but I didn't really pick up on the Nicotine. I smoked it in a smallish Peterson 150 and it took about 30-45 minutes. I was expecting something along the lines of the nic hit that accompanies Brown Bogie, but it didn't feel any stronger than a FVF or others of that ilk.

1) A general note : old American shag/ribbon cuts were, by design, all-purpose (roll into cigarettes/smoke in your pipe/chew) tobaccos. Today we're evaluating Five Bros. specifically as PIPE tobacco.

2) Another : If Honest, Mechanic's Delight, Weyman's and the rest of them were still around, we wouldn't have the situation where the one that won "Survivor" necessarily represented the whole genre by default.

:face:

As ever, blend strength is largely subjective. One man's kicking mule is another's satisfying ol' standby. Personally, I'm glad to see that Lane has chosen to make this old time favourite available for the foreseeable future.

Having been smoking a bit I obtained in a bombing I thusly proclaim it a hit. Too simple for some, too harsh for others, more for the rest of us.
