Flakes in a Meerschaum?

Is smoking a flake tobacco in a meerschaum pipe not a good idea, that is, dedicating said pipe to a certain flake tobacco? If not, what would be a better choice of cut? Of course it's the time-honored color I'm after here.

I don't know of any reason not to. It takes a lot to ghost a meer (not impossible, but a lot).

I just fold it over and stuff in my meerschaum pipe. No problems. If you are talking about small flakes of tobacco, such as small cut burley and the like, maybe you would suck up some of the tobacco through the air hole and get it stuck in the stem. I've done that and it's a pita to stop smoking and stuff a pipe cleaner in the bit to loosen it up. On the other hand, I would think that a ribbon cut tobacco would probably be better. But that's just my opinion, I'm sure someone else here that has a lot more experience with piping could chime in on this.

Smoke anything you like in a meer sez I. No reason why flakes would not work as well as any other cut. But as Con has pointed out, be aware that stray bits of the flake may clog the airway. And this could also be said of any pipe. That's what pipe cleaners are for, after all!

Flakes smoke just fine in a meer. I do it all the time when the WX is warmer. Enjoy your meer!! :cheers: FTRPLT

I've smoed everything from flaes, to ropes to ribbon cuts and have had no problems. Been doing this with my 4 meers for over 40 years now and have had no ghosting in all that time! Besides, a meer will let to taste the actual flavor of the blend !!! :twisted:

Thanks, Brothers! Virginias, and their various mutations (VaPers, VaPer,Burs, etc), especially in flake form, are my preferred tobak. I mean, of course I DO smoke a whole lot of ribbon , cake and other forms as well, but I think you catch my drift. My main concern is just HOW much attention I have to give to these precious "porcelain dolls" of the pipe world. Gawd! You wanna smoke a new kind of pipe and do "the right thing" and "get the color" and the next thing you know your gears are spinning much too fast and the wheels are shooting by the windows!

Others may correct me, but I think the only way to get meers to the 'right' color is to either 1) smoke it often over many years, and keep waxing it; or 2) buy it pre-colored

There is no reason not to smoke flakes in your meer. If that's what floats your boat go for it. Coloring is dependent on the juices developed during smoking and the color is brought to the surface by the waxes and oils applied to the outside of the pipe. Some people use just plain bees wax others use a blend of bees wax and olive oil. You can also buy synthetic sperm whale oil from Dixie Gun Works for less than 10$ for an 8oz bottle. Sperm whale oil was used on all meers before the banning of whaling.

This for sure! In 30 years of daily use it ought to be just right color wise !! :twisted:

I have been eyeballing a smooth Meer from IMP. Do you actually have to wax the thing all the time? I don't care about coloring, I just want to smoke it. I plan on smoking a ton of flakes in it.

If you don't care about the coloring, then as far as I know, no.

I’ve got a mere bowl for a unique spiral stem Falcon. Great little smoker. It does quite well with flakes...and pretty much anything else.
