Found a putty fill INSIDE the bowl of my new pipe

I bought a new pipe, a Savinelli Baronet, and on the second smoke a fill was revealed in the bowl. I was suprised to see it and wonder what problems if any will arise as I continue to use the pipe.

Anyone else have fills in the bowl of any of thier pipes?

personally I wish makers would just leave the natural imperfections or blast them, but I.don't make those decisions.

I think he means IN the bowl, on the inside walls of the chamber. I haven't seen any Baronet's that weren't rusticated. I think it probably has a chance of coming out as the briar expands and cools with smoke, but I wouldn't be sure. If that happens, I'd just fill in the hole with some pipe mud and it should be good.

Just leaving fills on the outside would be great, adds character. I guess having a pinkish putty spot on a smooth pipe as you smoke it and it colors is a kind of character too, though.

Fills happen, sadly more these days than back then: older Petes I've noticed have far fewer of 'em.

It sucks, too...often you only notice them about a half-dozen pipefuls in. As long as they smoke good, right?

Well, it happens. This is common today with a lot of makes, and most end-users aren't even aware of them. While it can be cause for alarm due to recent threads on here, don't let it worry you. Burnthroughs and bowl failures are still quite rare these days.


Just smoke the pipe and enjoy it, no reason to worry, Brother. After you get a good carbon layer built up in the bowl, you'll forget all about the fill and still get many years of enjoyable service out of that Sav.

This makes me feel better. I have three other Savs and love them so it was a suprise to find a bowl flaw on this one.

Little fills in the exterior of an otherwise nice pipe -- especially when you've either known about them or expected to find them in advance, are increasingly to be expected with newer pipes (and the "second" lines of old, "good" makers). They're harmless, cosmetic annoyances.

But a fill inside the bowl is an invitation to a problem you don't want to have, and definitely want to know about. How big ? HOW FAR toward the outside does it run ? That's anywhere from "the appearance of impropriety" to outright fraud, IMO.

I have a pre-Republic Peterson Shamrock that has 14 fills in it. Maybe it's the exception that proves the rule. :lol:

Peterson was kind of over an economic barrel.

Importers used them as the cheapest-of-the-cheap that had a name, pushing them for even more and even cheaper. It tarred their better stuff (which was often not even imported) with a bad reputation it didn't deserve.

You know, folks, time does march on, but supplies of dense old briar is a very long term renewable resource. I think we are seeing more use of younger burl stock with all its inherent faults.

I've never seen a putty fill inside a bowl, but I wouldn't smoke it without at least finding out what materials are used to make the putty.

Well then, I retract my statement. From now on, I'll say every fill on old Petersons exist on one of Rad Davis' pre-republic pipes. :lol:

I don't think Greg Pease necessarily agrees with the notion they're there to cover things up (bowl coatings, that is) but he's going to rabble-rouse a bit more with "Part II" of the subject next month, methinks. :twisted:

The obviousness coatings COULD cover something up is suspect in itself, but burnouts are still pretty rare. Or...bowl coatings are actually effective, and we've tripped upon a dirty secret that's there for our benefit without being exposed as it would sully some good names. (Pipe conspiracy! :lol: )

Anyone tinfoil-wrapping their pipes to keep them safe?

I think it will be alright. I contacted the store I bought it from and they said all of thier pipes can be returned within a year if there are any problems.

Anyone have personal experience with a fill in the bowl?
